Need opinions on possible grades

Any opinions would be great on these two. Need to submit both. The Bird/Magic seems perfect with the exception of the top left side of the card. It's raised (above the bird card). Not sure how easy it is to see in the photos. The Gretzky has two dinged corners and what looks like a dimple. Thanks everyone for any feedback!!!

The Bird Johnson card looks really nice. I see the spot you are talking about I think...directly over Bird's shoulder. Hard to tell how significant it is from the picture. Maybe knocks it down to a 7 or 8?

The Gretzky card has several issue as you point out. All four corners are touched and two are bent. I hate to say it but that might knock it down to a 4. Maybe I'm being too harsh and someone else will tell me I'm crazy.

I think the Gretzky has a shot at a 5. I just had this one pop...it’s a 4...and I think CardCollector11’s copy is superior even with the touched corners and dimple.

  • It's true CC11's has better eye appeal. I was just going on the technical grading levels and although the corners on your card are touched up with lots of white and the top edge too, none of the corners are actually banged/bent. We've all seen cards that have better eye appeal but have been held back for other reasons. It does have seemingly great gloss on the card and the edges are in pretty good shape. I hope I'm wrong in my assessment and it scores a 5 for you.

  • I was pretty upset when I looked close at the Bird/Magic. I've not looked at it out of the case for probably 20 years and never noticed the raised edge. I've assumed that it was a 9 until looking at it closely in the last week.

I agree. From what I see, absent that raised edge, the Bird Johnson card looks mint to me.
