Advice Needed: Sell or Hold?

frankhardyfrankhardy Posts: 8,097 ✭✭✭✭✭

I recently came into a few decent unopened boxes. I plan on selling most of it and will do very well without selling the item I want to discuss.

Part of this haul is a 1987 Fleer Rack Case. This case appears to be factory sealed. Although I am not an expert on cases, I have looked at a couple of others and found that they had similar factory tape.

My question - should I sell it or hold onto it?

The last case sold for well over $700. A couple of other listings are asking well over four figures. What do you guys think about a case like this?

My thoughts are that even though the 1980s were mass-produced I think stuff like this may be starting to get a little more scarce.

If I do decide to sell do you think I should sell it as a sealed case or should I open it and sell it by the box? It looks like it might be a "six one way and half a dozen the other" type of situation. In other words it doesn't look to me like there is a premium on a sealed case but I was just looking at this example. What do you think the future holds with something like this?

There’s a lot more 1987 Fleer out there than many people think; but I also think the RCs are undervalued. Bonds, Bo, Larkin to name a few. Borders and backs prone to chipping, centering an issue too. I see this product jumping at some point.

I say at this point hold. Unopened has been going up and I believe it will continue to do so. Selling as a sealed case would probably be better than opening the case but the shipping could be cumbersome.

Those are factory seals, so I would leave intact versus selling by the box. I say hold this case. 1987 Fleer has not seen the same jump as its pre-1985 counterparts. This set is undervalued and will only go up as Bonds lore grows over time. In 2-3 years that will be a $2000 case and fairly tough to find factory sealed.

I was leaning that way for sure. I just wanted more opinions.

Your case ain't eating any bread, drinking any water, wasting electricity or bothering anyone; I'd say, "Hang on to it"

more details are needed. to ask yourself, not necessarily post.

do you have the space to store properly?

what's a price point that you don't have to struggle with whether to hold or sell? $2k? $3k? etc,

do you need the $1k? if ya do, then sell.

if ya don't and have the space, this is an easy hold situation. as mentioned above, tons of rookies that are just now on the brink of bringing real value. once it hits that "no brainer" price point you discussed with yourself previously, sell it!

to me, the fact that you have to ask, means it's still a hold situation.

Hold. For whatever reason these cases are not getting the valuations they should.

One just sold on Ebay and I was the under bidder. If I had not just dropped five figures in feb on other unopened I would have bid more.

I agree 100% with this statement.

While some think the unopened market doesn't have many sleeper opportunities left, this is one item that has room to grow.

I think for some people it’s a complete pain in the ass to store.
