Registry sets

With a little persuasion and help from a new friend I’ve decided to get into the registry set game. It sounds fun and exciting and I’m having a lot of fun already.
Questions:
What registry sets do you have?
How did you get started?
What are your goals?

What are you considering collecting? Most of us started with a date/mint series and tried to fill. I now participate in the Registry Showcase that allows for more diverse sets. Best advice I can offer is to search out a Mentor in the area you are going to collect, and go slow. Always consider when buying, someday selling the same. You don't want to load up on coins that you can't sell one day.
I don't do the registry here as its too restrictive, therefore I use the registry ats where I don't have the restrictions. I suggest that you take your time and research the sets you want to collect and see if your registry goals can be met. As an example if your goal is to have a number 1 ranking set then you may very well have a lot of work to do and will need a significant amount of money in many cases. There are some areas in the registry that are more budget friendly, and many fun sets can be built if the #1 slot is not a goal. So read the rules for the sets you like and set realistic goals, I think you will find it more rewarding that way. As to your questions:
1) I have several sets, many are just for fun and I don't expect to finish them all. If you click on the links in my sig line it will take you to my primary collecting interest my Lincoln registry set in the NGC registry which is not 100% complete yet (it is for the 09-58 portion) and ranks #6 right now. And my old holder collection, sadly even on the NGC registry many of my old holders are not seen as they are holders that cannot be displayed like ANACS, and PCI.
2) I bought some coins and kept going.
3) My realistic goal is to be in the top five once complete, if I ever do make it to complete. The other goal is to buy the best quality coin in the price range I can afford, early on I had registry fever and bought a few low end coins that I hope to replace with better quality coins as I go along.
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I just started doing some PCGS Registry sets in January and some ATS ones last December. I basically put all my slabbed coins into the main inventory at both sites and then used the autobuild function and realized that I’m mainly a Everyman Type set collector.
I created multiple sets here and ATS that are mainly Type sets, some circulated and some regular and just with my old slabbed coins, 90% of which I purchased either slabbed or raw and submitted myself over a decade ago, I made it into the upper teens with the one that is Everyman/circulated 19th century type set with gold in both sites.
The other sets I ranked mainly in the 30ish rank but one was as high as 150 or so. Since then I also bought a few more coins that fit into the circulated 19th century set but also go into many of the other sets at the same time. All of the sets went up in their ranking and I think I am #12 here at PCGS and #10 ATS for the same main set (Everyman/circulated 19th Century Type with gold).
My goals now are to finish taking pictures of my slabbed coins since most of them are before Trueviews existed. I’m also going to slowly add more coins to my inventory that go into my main set. But I’ll also probably buy some that are just for the other sets if I find something I really like that has good eye appeal and is a key or a cool variety or mint mark.
I think keeping in the top 10 for at least that one Set on both sites is a great goal, but I want to take it slow and don’t want to just go for points, I want the coins to mostly have some attribute that makes them cool for some reason even though that doesn’t give you extra ranking points. Like I’d rather have lower grade Charlotte mint gold piece than a higher grade common mint piece even though the higher grade common one is more points.

My registry sets are all under TurtleCat so I’m easy to find. My three active sets are (in order of how often I add):
I have some others for various gold type sets. I’ve been on the registry off and on since it started. I like the registry as both an inventory device but I also like showing my coins and seeing how it compares with others.
I doubt anyone has ever looked at any of my registry sets, though, but if anyone did maybe they’d like some of the pics. My goals are to get as close to complete on those three series as I can given financial constraints and time. But I know I’ll never complete my gold dollar full set as some of the pieces are prohibitively expensive.
While I think the registry sets can increase one's hobby enjoyment, I would caution you to resist the temptation to "fill the hole" with a less than satisfactory coin. Be sure to define your personal standard first and hold to it, ignoring the points associated with a higher graded coin that doesn't meet your standard. Take your time - there's no need to race to the finish.
I don't use the registry as a competition since this interferes with my collecting goals. I do have a half cent type registry with 4 of 5 coins completed. The last one (1793) is too expensive for the condition I wish to own. So, it will never be completed. I have a basic U.S. type registry started, but I won't complete that one either due to cost and types that I don't care about (particularly moderns). That one is mainly used for display/tracking purposes.
There are some wonderful registry sets to view and many owners post here. You might review a few to see how others utilize the registry. You'll see a wide variety of quality among sets where lower ranked sets are much more desirable (in my opinion). For me, I'd rather own the quality and skip the points competition.
