This is my first submission since the step process. What is best estimate from going from grading to assembly and after. It is express service. Also, grading step, if they thought it was altered would they end process right there?

If they thought card was altered would they end steps right there?
If the card was deemed altered it wouldn't make it to the grading stage, it would end at research and ID.
I'm also pretty sure there is no accepted timeframe for moving between any of the stages in the current state of affairs. However with Express you are looking at weeks, maybe a month or more.
They are showing Jan 12, 2021 for the oldest open order for Express, if you were entered in the system around that date you must be on deck to be completed!
Where do you see oldest open order for Express?

Altered cards do make it all the way thru the stages. Depending on the discretion of the grader, they can slab the card "Authentic Altered" or return the card to you unslabbed.
@PROMETHIUS88 is correct. Jayman is not.

I've had N-5 altered stock cards returned to me that didn't get graded, pretty sure those didn't make it to the grading process. But it sounds like it's not as cut and dry as that. Does it depend on the type of alteration?
The steps still get completed. You can also request on the submission ... if you know it is an authentic/altered card that they slab it as such. I had a 34 Goudey Ruth that someone sent in previously that was sent back as altered and not holdered. So knowing that was going to be the case, I just put a note on the submission form.
Someone in customer service had previously told me that it is up to the grader it slab or not. She said that if it comes thru and the grade is revealed but not slabbed, to call in and tell them you want it slabbed. I didn't have to worry about that since I asked for it up front.
Now you obviously aren't going to always know up front if you have an altered card. But it will go thru the "steps" process as normal.
Learn something new everyday! I assumed incorrectly that it gets screened for alteration prior to ending up in a grader's hands, and if deemed altered it stops there in the process. Thanks for the info!
At what step are you able to see the grade? Mine is at QA #1, step 6 of 8
Step 8. Good luck!
Thanks
