Hello folks, another newbie here looking for general advice. Enjoyed lurking for a while too.

You all probably tired of all the new folks getting into the cards, but I'm not looking to be a collector just seeking some advice on childhood collection. Getting on in years now and I know my off-spring will likely just throw these all out once I'm gone so got a wild hair and decided to try and catalog them as best I can and save/grade/sell any that may be worth while. Wife is not too happy about taking over her table when I started:

These cards have been stored for decades but never in sleeves or anything. 99.5% probably worthless, but may be a few worthy ones in there or may not. As I said, not a collector and don't know much on grading worthy cards so hopefully can get some advice as I go through these. To this point I have gone through and logged the years I have from 1965 through 1981 (1485 cards total) in a spreadsheet. 1982+ remain on the kitchen table, but probably not much in those stacks.

Found this xograph from 1972 in the mix:

A Henderson rookie but it's off center and has issues so not worth a grade I'd think:

Not sure in image rules as scans tend to come out rather large at 1200dpi. Anyway, just wanted to say hi and let you all know I may be asking advice. Thanks!

I do have a "Super Sports Card Locker" case full of mid-late 70s football cards as well. Haven't touched then yet so no clue what is in there. Have some older ones as well laying around. Too bad on this Warfiled card and Signed Roy jefferson (did at 600dpi)

Not sure what's in the box though.

Unfortunately none of those are worth grading. Keep digging though. Maybe you'll strike gold.

welcome aboard! condition is key when grading or selling. you can also check ebay sold listings to get an idea on values.

@craig44 Thanks. I have been checking the PSA lists but obviously those for extremely nice cards. Just using it as a guide to see what could even be worth anything. Don't hold high hopes but fun looking.

@gemint Haha. Seriously doubt it - at least not to grade standards. But who knows?

@Ahmanfan Thanks and was a few beers! :)

Found this one just now. Likely same issues:

Or could be my scanner (HP 8610) also sucks beans. But I shy on side of old and weary cards. :)

What's in you '71 baseball stack? Strong prices right now on the star cards. Concepcion, Simmons, Garvey, etc.

Notoriously tough set with black borders and 79's are often off-center. I recently retired and it is my hobby once again, totally enjoying and know they are all have been paid for a long time ago...no interest in this new stuff. Enjoy....

@Lefty Kudos! I am going into year 31 at my place and hope to follow in a few. :) I haven't bought a card pack since early 80s I'd think. But may as well go through my youth again.

@PastaBoy we got bought out so I went a little earlier then planned, but all good was 65+ at time, my competition for 33+ years bought us and I lasted 41 days before exiting, haven't looked back. I currently have cards in 2 rooms to play with. Did some of my autograph book with PSA, my photo's are in another discussion thread. Only recommendation is keep beverages on another table....lol. Enjoy

You have cards of value there. Like some said above, probably not things you send it to grade, but any of the early 70's cards set collectors (like myself) would certainly be interested in buying if you sell. Not going to get you a mansion for retirement, but again, there is some value there for sure.

    @JoeBanzai Thanks!

@76collector I was being honest when I said I'm doing this because I know my offspring and wife would just toss it all as junk. I'm not at all sure what to do with them but that seems like a big waste, so decided to try and figure it out. Anyway, not sure I'm all up for an E-bay seller account but maybe. Not sure how selling these kinds of cards works or prices ($1 ?) would work. Trying to get it sorted and not looking for gold. Appreciate the input!

Couple different years but not close to "mint"

This looks about as good as quality gets so far:

Looks like a fun collection. My cards from my brother were from 76-82 and in about the same shape as yours. What I did was make complete sets and kept track of which cards were from my brother and which cards I picked up to fill in the set. The 79 and 80 set would be a breeze since you already have the Ozzie and Ricky. The 71 set on the other hand would take some $$ to complete.

Do you have any more 73s? I’d take the Ryan off your hands. Need about 70 more in about that shape (assuming it has no creases).

Has the Henderson become one of those cards to grade no matter what, or not quite yet?

Welcome and nice stuff. It’s great to see!

It’s amazing how as kids it was just having the card of player X - who cared about the condition. Funny thing - even if we did put them in sleeves, most are OC anyway!

    PastaBoyPastaBoy Posts: 175 ✭✭✭

@Ahmanfan I only have 15 '73 cards and no crease in Ryan. (wouldn't that show on scan? Bad as my scanner may be.) '74 even worse as only 5 cards (Rookie Ken Griffey Sr.) But all about in that shape.

@daltex No clue. Would Ozzie fall in that category?

Something like this is way too off centered but is it worth anything? That's my conundrum as I try and get rid of these. lol

'78 molitor/trammell, one of my favorites
You might do well selling raw individual cards and card lots on ebay.
Your scanner is good. There is a lot of set builders out there.
At the very least, it's gonna be a fun hobby

Somehow I have 6 Jack Morris rookie, 3 Lou Whitaker rookie, and 2 Dale Murphy rookie cards from the '78 set in addition to above Molitor/Trammel. Not sure how that ever happened. I do know many cards were stolen back in the day like my Reggie Jackson rookie card. Oh well. Memories I guess.

Everything is worth something, and you do have some of the right names in their rookie years. The quandry is attaching the correct price to the conditions shown. I had a friend who used to say to customers "I can't change the condition, but I can adjust the price."

@emar They look like this...(only 600dpi this go as hate to consume so much space on server!)

@Ahmanfan I briefly checked football cards and they "seem" to have held up better in their crate. Only went through a few and these were in mix but condition wise they look like this mostly:

Guess I'll have to figure out the whole Ebay (or other market?) thing and just see how it works. Find a local dealer? Seem few and far between now.

@Ahmanfan Thinking for some favorites may just throw away some money in a bulk sub just to see.

Still slowly going through cards. The 1993 Topps and Score cards look in good shape so far. Too modern I know. But have some faves in there. Sorting through some FB cards (needed a break from BB) and condition seems better. Sample:

Bought some protectors since guess it's never too late to try and save some of 'em! :)

Continuing this vs. starting new...continued going through cards I have and am almost to end of them. Have some stacks of late 80's topps and donruss to finishing inventory on. Have also taken the time to get them logged into TCDb site as well. Man that's helpful! Have 7,583 logged now. Props for OCDness! ;P

Thinking centering on these is too off but some 600dpi scans on multiple 1981 Topps culled out:

Just raw of course. Be much older if tried to grade some (if worthy) and wait on return going by what I read here on backlogs. lol
