I know this isn't a very kind or even appropriate topic but what is the consensus? It clearly had an impact on Kobe's cards but his was unexpected.
Did the Hank Aaron cards increase?
Bill Russell and Jim Brown are 87 & 85 years old as examples and I hope they both get another 5 to 10 years.

I think it raises the awareness of the impact that they had throughout their career and the legacy they left. I think it is especially true in Hank's case and the market finally reflects such.

I would say there's at least a slight bump to cards anytime a great athlete hits the mainstream news (at least if it's not criminal charges), death sadly included. Autos, yes, as the number is now finite. Not something I would be comfortable cashing in on personally, but the interest amongst the general public is increased.
So, when did 90 fleer basketball die?
Sadly it died in 1991, but recently Igor brought Dr. Fronkensteen the brain from a dead guy named Abby something, and after one rainy, lightning filled evening, voilà.
A lot of these guys are just out of the limelight for ages before they die. So the news cycle of their passing usually reinvigorates demand for their cards a bit. (And also reinvigorates people selling them.) Autographs also get a jump - I'm assuming because there's now a finite supply of those.
The same day Paul Hornung died, I bet two dozen of his rookie cards popped up on Ebay - all at a significant price increase.
Supply & demand..
Once gone they aren't signing anymore.
