Anyone here know a reputable coin dealer around Modesto, Ca.?

My step-dad is 81 yrs old. He's looking to sell his collection. I have no clue what he collected. I know he got stuck in to the novelty colored coin sets and stuff like that but he also has some silver, gold bullion, etc.... They are thinking of taking it to a place called https://mantecagoldpawnandcoins.com/. They are called Modesto Gold Jewlery and Coins. They said they have good reviews but when I look them up, the only reviews I find are people that have bought jewelry from them. They live in a town called Gustine. It's in the San Joaquin valley. I know they probably won't want to travel far but if anyone can help me on this, let me know.

I recommend you go to a coin show, lots of dealers and you can plan them against each other. A lot of the shows are listed on the coinzip.com website.

I appreciate that thought but he is 80 yrs old. He's trying to sell all at once. From what I understand he has boxes of stuff. Not sure a dealer at a show would make the time to go thru everything.

I'm suspicious of pawn shops. Very few of the ones I've seen are run by people who know anything about coins.

There are coin shops all over California. You can do an internet search for California Coin Shops and come up with a list of shops, including those located in San Joaquin, Stanislaus and eastern Contra Costa County. Dale Bryant has a coin shop in Antioch, Cal. (though he has been considering relocating the shop to Brentwood).

You could also ask if there are any forum members who live within driving distance of Gustine who would be willing to meet your step dad at a safe public location for the purpose of looking at photographs of his collection and a sampling of his collection.

I am up in Sacramento, if you have had a list of what there is I could figure out if worth the drive. I drive by him every long each I go to, but doubt there will be one of those soon.

I would skip the pawn shop.

Glenn Holsonbake has a shop in Sacramento. I can't speak for him in terms of the various items your father has (the novelty stuff in particular may not net much from any dealer), but he's honest as they come and if Sacramento isn't too far, worth at least a call or an email to see if it might work.

I know this is gonna be tough. I'm trying to get my mom to take some pics with her phone and see if I can get an idea of what he might have.
