Quick Technical Question about encapsulating

I have a large silver 1908 British traade Dollar that was brought home from the orient in the early 50's. Gary, the man in the Merchant Marine who brought it home to my grandfather apparently thought it might corrode in the Salt Air and covered it in a coating of grease and wrapped it up in oil Cloth like a few other coins he thought might be valuable.

Anyway, since it was my granfathers and is of no great value except sentimental, I soaked the coin in Acetone to remove the grease and then blotted it dry. I was thinking about having PCGS encapsulate it and passing it along to my son with my collection of Morgans. Will the fact that I soaked it in acetone to remove the grease constitute cleaning? Will PCGS note it as cleaned and not grade it or will they grade it? Mint glaze is still present over most of the coin, so what I would think of as cleaning didn't happen, but my definition could be wrong. Yes, I knew that the silver would not react in the Acetone!

Thanks for any input.

An acetone soak alone (no rubbing) is totally fine. In theory if the grease caused surface damage then that might be an issue, but I don't see why that would happen.

Great, Thank you! I had to give it 3 separate soaks to get the grease off with clean acetone each time. And no rubbing. I blotted the acetone up with a old soft, wore out tee shirt. Didn't want to rub it at all, and if the acetone hadn't had some residual grease in it, wouldn't have even blotted it!

    Thanks again.

Soaking a coin in acetone would not be considered cleaning if you sent it in for grading. The only way they would call the coin cleaned is if they saw something else on the coin to mention it on the holder.

OK, thanks. I haven't sent a coin in for years, but have decided to slowly do all my Morgans. I had noticed that some of the coins being displayed for sale said "Cleaned" and then just a detail rating. The coin isn't high grade, but figure it about a AU 53 and wanted it graded.
    Thanks again.

Nice trade dollar. I think you did right by removing the grease with acetone. Looks like a really nice AU piece. Let us know the results. Peace Roy
