Given the current environment, any 'best guesses' of what the following BASEBALL unopened wax would be worth (top-end price). Provide regular wax and FASC guestimates. Assume BBCE wrapped.

I figure at a minimum it may be fun to look back at this thread in 10 years. There isn't much for data out there, and whatever you find, it's outdated in 30 days.

ETA: These have all been updated based on feedback so far.

1971 $150K - $200K
1972
1973 (pick the series, but lets start with series 4) $10K non FASC ???
1974 $11K non FASC ???
1975 Regular size $19K - $24K (non FASC)
1975 Mini ($10K non FASC/$12K - $15K FASC)
1976 (15 cent) $8K non FASC ???
1977 $10K non FASC / $21K FASC
1978 $5K non FASC
1979 $4K non FASC / $XX FASC
1980 $10,200 non FASC / $XX FASC
1981 $900 non FASC / $1,500 FASC

What would a 71 topps box go for?

    Terry Bradshaw was AMAZING!!

75 regular box is around $19-24k right now. 71 boxes - the last time I saw one was at the National a couple of years ago. The price back in 2016 was in the $70k+ range. Today I am thinking it is 2-3x that amount.

With the Eddie Murray and Molitor RC's, I would guess a BBCE wrapped 1978 wax box would fetch about $5k in today's environment.

Tim will weigh in with good estimates

My guesses assuming BBCE and non FASC:

    77 - 9-10k. Rarely see.
    78 - 5k but trending up quickly.
    79 - 4k
    80 - 10k as of yesterday.

1980 .....10K ...what a riot....I was at a show in 1981 and was told "Don't go near that stuff, it's total junk....way Over Produced!!!!! So instead I bought a Rickey Henderson rookie (real nice) for 4 bucks and a (real nice) Eddie Murray rookie for 6 bucks!!!

‘77 fasc sold privately for $21k cash.

eta: and I still don’t know if that’s a solid price or a steal. in general, the fasc premium on anything vintage really, seems to have been very undervalued than it actually shoulda been, IMO.

‘77 FASC for $21k would normally be absurd not in today’s world. No strong rookies to elevate it like 75, 78, 79, and 80. One of my favorite childhood sets but hard to find value - same for ‘76 which for sentimental reasons is my favorite set.

Blurry agree 1000% re FASC being previously undervalued. What’s funny is Steve may have invented the term only 5-7 years ago? I mean I never even gave FASC a thought and have been buying unopened boxes for 15 years.

Also agree 77 has limited “rookie” star power. But, my guess is the Dale Murphy HOF push isn’t over.

And even without that, time will make the 77’s and all the regular issue HOF cards (Ryan, Rose, et al) coveted like everything else.

    Dawson too.

But back to the fasc thing and lack of a killer hof rookie class, I think folks are starting to realize just how short of a supply anything pre-80 (80 included) is in this form. It just doesn’t become available. And unlike high graded singles which are in the 1000s, theres only so many, if any, on the market at any given time. With that being said, it doesn’t really take too many new entrants to make these things explode.

Couple in the fact that folks born in these years are starting to hit their prime income making years, 43?. Married, kids, established household with more disposable income on top of whatever we call whats currently transpiring and...

I think full boxes like this are kinda hit and miss on price points. Depending on who’s in the market or what hole they need to plug can cause some what of a variance between sales. I could see the next box going for $15k or going for $30k.

the gentleman that purchased this one was born in ‘77 and saving it to rip for his 50th birthday. He’s not an unopened collector but specifically did not want a Frankenstein box. he was also very concerned with where prices have been headed that he was content to lock this one down at what “may” be a hefty premium due to scarcity, but could be an absolute steal tomorrow. Heck, who knows these days. I sure don’t.

I’d love to know the “open” date of the 77 FASC box. Given FASC term isn’t that old, it suggests there may be more of the 77’s out there.

We did a case break here a few years back. Think 70stopps (Dave) did it? bought 5-6 boxes to fill it & get the overall case broke. Memory is a lil hazy. Something like that. The price per box was pretty hefty at the time, if I recall correctly. But I was also born in ‘77 so was partial to the year and was gonna do what I needed to lock down a fasc box for my personal collection.

Thanks. I vaguely remember that break, but it was before kids college was paid off.......had to watch from sidelines.

I love the story about the 77 and the 50th birthday.

I know it's still 6 years away but I sure hope he video tapes the break and posts it on Youtube. That would be a fun break to watch. I just bought a FASC 1977 vending box in the last REA auction, though not to break. 1977 were the packs sold at the snack bar during my little league games the first year I played. I still remember getting them after every game.

From REA auction Dec 2020 -

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭✭✭

Thanks for that. In that case the $21k was a great sale.

  • KurtisJosephKurtisJoseph Posts: 214 ✭✭✭

Any thoughts on 1975 wax mini. That's my key year of collecting, along with 1978 and 1981. I haven't seen a Mini Box come up for a while. Seems like I saw one on BBCE for $7K a couples ago. Did I see that correctly? So if that was 2-3 months ago, what would you sell one for now. . .

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭✭✭

    Eh, $10k ?

10k is the new baseline for anything super cool.

Then what about one that's FASC?

  • balco758balco758 Posts: 1,396 ✭✭✭✭✭

It’s a funny question as some 75 Mini FASC boxes had a bad OC rep. Forgot if those were Conlon or Frisch.

Anyway, my guess - $10-12k for FASC.

  • grote15grote15 Posts: 29,696 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'd put a 75 mini FASC box at 12-15K right now.

Right now, prices are in such a state of flux that I am loathe to list anything for sale though I do have a 1980 cello box from BBCE coming in shortly.

Very nice! I am a super fan of super cellos!

Here are a couple of 79s, which is a box you don't often see.

Thanks for posting Tim. Those are really cool. I've never seen 1979 super cellos before.
