Grade...or garbage? 1979 Topps Baseball

For the folks who have fun picking out every defect on people's pics and scans. Here are 3 cards of mine that I think are pretty top shelf (not the Ryan since the centering). What do the experts think, is there a 10 anywhere in these other three HOFers??? And details please, not just 'Those are 9's'. Enjoy and thanks!

9’s are to be treasured. Seek 9’s and any 10 is a blessing.

    Palmer is the nicest card.

Agreed. Palmer is a beauty. 79s are ridiculously tough and undervalued imo.

The slightly diamond centering on Palmer will surely prohibit a 10.

Nice, good eye on that...thanks for pointing it out.

Yount is slightly o/c right to left. will not get 10, but 9 is still good. Carew the same only left to right.

Not 10s, but surely not garbage either. Enjoy them.

  • Yeah, blowing them up like that really shows the centering shifts. I thought the Carew was the best initially.

You could get a 10 on the Palmer, but I predict an 8 or 9.

Centering on the others prohibits any 10's.

    I would say Palmer 9, Yount 9, Carew 8.

I agree that the Yount is off enough to not get a 10. If it was in a 10, I would suspect that someone would post it on this site asking how it could ever get a 10 with that centering.

Also, please remember that we really can't see the corners in these scans. You should examine the corners at different angles and with different lighting under 10x magnification.

10 or garbage is too binary an analysis. If perfection were a requirement, I never would have gotten my first job, or gotten married, or done much of anything else.

Personally these cards would be in binders for me but if you want them slabbed for a registry set, or just because, knock yourself out.

  • It’s just a catchy title and a way for me to become better aware of what others see in cards that I may not be seeing yet when I try to really scrutinize them.

Last PSA 9 Palmer sold for $70 on ebay so its definitely worth subbing imo.

Tim are you sure? Between new fees, postage and the cost of 12 months of patience! Lol.

I’ve now moved my minimum submission value to $250. Otherwise can’t justify.

I submit via group bulk rate at about $10 a card, so it would be worth it to me. And by the time it comes back, it may be selling for twice that, too. :p

  • Yeah, $10/card is a sweet spot price. That's what I did my 45-card quarterly special back in Nov at. Won't see them forever but allows for some dumb decisions to have been made without any real harm.

  • Nice cards.

Palmer and Yount are very nice. 2 of my favorites from 79 Topps.

    Good luck if you submit.
