1973 Topps Football edges

At a local garage sale this weekend, I picked up a stack of 1973 Topps Football cards for $1. I noticed the edges have blue and some have red markings. I am not familiar with these cards at all (mostly a baseball guy). Is this normal for 1973 Topps or is this someone possibly taking a marker and running it down a stack of cards?
