Tyson vs Douglas - The biggest upset in boxing history

doubledragondoubledragon Posts: 23,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

So, yesterday was the 31 year anniversary of the biggest upset in boxing history. On February 11, 1990 in Tokyo Japan, the unbeaten, indestructible World Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson lost his crown to James "Buster" Douglas, a man most people thought was going to be destroyed by Tyson. The odds against Douglas were 42 to 1. Things didn't quite go as planned, and Douglas made boxing history.

I remember when this happened, I was just a young dragon, watching on TV. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I thought Tyson would demolish Douglas in the first few rounds, and then the rounds just kept going, and going. Tyson finally knocked Douglas down, but Douglas got back up and kept fighting and fighting. When Douglas finally finished Tyson off, I waa in total shock. I was left in a state of disbelief for hours. I had the same expression glued on my face for days!

I haven't seen this yet, but I'll checking it out this summer, ESPN made a 30 for 30 about this fight.

The early days of Iron Mike brings back some fond memories. I remember going to some seedy basement bars when I was around 17 with a buddy until one day his car got flipped by a bunch of older guys who wanted to send a message lol. Then the big parties we used to have for the pay per views. It’s funny because the under cards used to always seem to be better than the main attraction but I used to love seeing Tyson knock people out. Buster Douglas was a huge disappointment since I wanted Iron Mike to stay undefeated

Buster Douglas was a local guy. Many times his manager, a guy named Johnson if I remember correctly was interviewed by the local sportscasters. He proclaimed with great confidence that Buster would not only win the bout but would also win the rematch. Johnson had to take a second mortgage on his home to keep going. Buster did not get a big payday for this fight. He did get over 20 million for his bout with Holyfield as he was the Champ. From all indications he has managed his money well. Occasionally he is in the News here when he does charitable work in the underserved neighborhoods. Whenever this fight is shown I watch it again. I can't get enough of it.

At the time, I wanted to see another Tyson knockout, some fistic fireworks. Looking back, I admire Douglas for seizing the moment. He saw his window into immortality and he jumped right through it.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember the controversy about a slow count on the Douglas knock down.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I remember that very well because the day after the fight, two kids at my school got into an argument about the slow count, and some shoving occured, and it almost came to blows.

I remember after that fight Buster Douglas got a deal with SEGA and had his own video game, first on the original master system and then on genesis.

This was the original Rocky part 6, but it was never realeased into theaters. Watch as Rocky does battle with Grace Jones, a beast tougher than Ivan Drago!

A couple months after this fight, Douglas drove to my home town of 3000 people to meet a 11 year old kid dying of cancer. Douglas came over to his house around midnight. A few days later the boy passed away.

That uppercut which led to Tyson going down was brutal.

idk who this guy was calling the fight, but he was the man for the job. i still get chills all these years later watching & listening to this.

and how prescient was he, talking about Tyson's legs right before Douglas flipped the light switch

Bob Sheridan. One of the all time best fight commentators, maybe the best.

I didn't know that happened. I'm sure it meant the world to that kid.

Yes it did. And to the kids family. I still have the pictures from the newspaper. It was April, 1990.

I recall the odds i read in the newspaper was 48-1. But of course with odds that high it could easily vary from bookie to bookie on a boxing match.

I watched that fight live on TV. Almost everybody hated Tyson at that time and it was very enjoyable seeing him get knocked on his keister.
