It's a common look for Latin coinage from this period in my experience.

I agree the coin looks cleaned and the dark areas likely could not be lightened with the rest of the coin. Hard to say if it's a potential future problem. Hopefully, if NGC thought it would get worse, they would not have slabbed it.

I own an 1810 Chile 1/4R that had PVC residue on it. David Lange at NGC detected it when I submitted it at a show. If he hadn't, it presumably would have "body bagged" but this was in 2005 before "details" grading.

Will it get worse or stay the same? I paid already and he shipped it out so just curious.

    We call it Schmutz.

At one time, before the cleaning, it had a more uniform look with more of the dark dirt on the coin. The cleaning took off much of the dirt leaving some in the recesses. I do not believe it will “get worse” over time. Seems pretty stable to me.

Still pretty cool coin. Congratulations on owning it.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
