1984 Fleer Update Set

I don't even remember how long ago it was, but I bought this set from BBC Exchange and had four cards graded. The Clemens, Puckett, and Gooden all came back 9 and the Rose a 10.

I do not have a particular sentimental attachment to this set. I bought it because I wanted it and assured by Steve the set was in fantastic shape, and the cards' grades bore that out.

Gooden never panned out to the pitcher we all thought he could be and Clemens, well, you know. However, I have been tracking prices of these cards and like seemingly everything else, prices are exploding.

I do not see Clemens ever getting into the hall, and those voters who have drawn the line in the sand are not going to change their minds, ever.

Should I continue to hold? The Clemens was regularly selling for about $250 in November and now has crept into the $400 range. The Puckett has seen a similar trajectory, with sales now eclipsing $400. The Gooden has gone from a $50 card to nearly $200.

A set with no graded cards just closed for $900, which is 3x what I paid for the set. Is there still room to run on this set? Or am I better off realizing my gains and investing it elsewhere?

    It's a very iconic 80's set.
Clemens will always have a good collector base just as Rose does.
Same with Gooden, very popular card from that era.
I drug my feet too long buying the Clemens. Probably priced out of the 10. i'm aiming for a well centered 8.
HOF collectors like myself will put Clemens, Rose, Shoeless, etc into their PC regardless of enshrinement.
    I'd hold, that's just a personal opinion

I wouldn't count Gooden out for the HoF. He compares reasonably well with the players being considered from his era and the era before.

In any event, I wouldn't hang on to this set for investment potential, only if you like the cards. I figure when the dust settles, for '80s cards 9 will be a collector grade, not an investor one.

Still room to grow. Don’t count out the Rose, Seaver, Saberhagen and others. Also some low pop commons.

Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.
  • Thanks for the input everyone. I had forgotten to mention I had the Rose graded and it came back a 10.

I am going to hold for now, possibly get some more graded but unsure if it's worth doing so. I would suspect most in 9 would sell for what it costs to grade them.

I would hold on to it. It will never drop in price from what you paid for it; so it's just a matter of how much profit when you do sell. A beautiful set, regardless of HOF ers.

Only sell if you want something else, maybe a new set of gold clubs, a weekend trip, etc... You have to take gains at some point.

The last sub I got back pre pandemic had the 84 Clemens and Puckett I hit in a 10. Gooden Saberhagen and Rose were all 9s

I opened 2 more sets in the Summer none were as nice as these. Most are still in grading I did get an additional Clemens back in a 9 since then

Both Clemens and Puckett are long term holds for my collection
