Can the presence of a pet(cat) in your home negatively affect the value of your collectibles?

menousmenous Posts: 9

I have card and photo collectibles; mostly of a hockey nature.

I'm considering selling some of the collection.

I'm also considering getting a cat.

On ebay, I've run across the expression “pet free home” much like “smoke free home” from sellers describing an item for sale.

Could the presence of a cat in my small studio apartment drive down the value of any cards I want to sell?

What precautions do collectors with pets take to protect their cards and photos?

I should mention that my most valuable cards are graded and slabbed.

Thanks and stay well.

I wouldn’t see an issue unless your place had a foul pet smell when you walked in the door. Make sure there are no animal hairs in the cards when photographing and packing up and you are good to go.

I'm usually not impressed when I see pet free home in the listing.
I have 2 dogs. They're not allowed to play with the cards B)
    You'll be fine

now a wife and a collection is an entirely different scenario, in which i would suggest the cat instead on certain occasions.

    Morning,

Cat and Dog Hairs are fine, they just add panache to the mix. Nothing Like Scanning a Really Nice Lot of Raw Cards for recording Submission purposes and looking at the scan and there are 12 different Dog Hairs in the Scan and the Scanner Bed. And I just wiped it down 2 scans ago!

There is a member here, who I would never out, but every item I receive from them has the signature, I have animals, with animal Hair! I love it, I had 4 Dogs 0n my Rural property in the Rocky Mountains till 4 years ago. I used to Joke with the wife I could open a Sealed Can of Dinty Moore Stew, with the Can Opener and there would be a Dog Hair in it!!!!
    Thanks

I don't think my pet skunk would go for it.

Be careful not to leave your graded cards out on any flat surface unattended. A cat will push those items to the floor and cause scratches on the plastic.

    Hmmmm.

Maybe if they pee on your stuff? I don't see a problem.

I've been collecting over 30 yrs and have had "rescue" cats almost the same amount of time without any detriment that I can see?

My cats were saved from disaster and it's a privilege to have them in our home.

I have had pets for decades they brought and still only bring happiness. How can they affect your collectibles don't leave them places where they may play with them simple as that. If you have things say $10 000 or more valuable get a bank safe or a large home safe one that air can circulate in and fire proof.

Your pet will become more important to you than any collectible trust me. Just place your stuff where the pet can't reach them. Get your cat fixed and they will not piss all over the place. For cats cut their nails do not have them laser removed they cut threw the bones in the fingers. It hurts the animal very much for months. Get them use to being brushed and nails clipped. The laser option once the animal gets older can have arthritis I believe and it's painful.

I have sold on eBay for over 10 years I have never mentioned I own a pet why would I my house is always clean.

I actively seek out and buy cards from cat owners. It is a subtle but I think meaningful incentive for adoption.

  • I feel lucky to have found a forum with such helpful members!

You've all put my mind at ease.

My cat concerns have been thoroughly put to rest; in the cat-positive way I was hoping they could be.

I'll no doubt be back for more advice on non-pet related collectible issues.

Thank to all and a special thanks to "Butch" and "Stone193"'s 2 cats for their input.

    You're the best!

    Stay well.

A life without a pet is not a life for me. Buy one or two and you will be happy. If you have a larger space 2 cats can fun together.

If you can locate a Russian Blue they are considered the smartest and extremely loyal. I had one for 20 years best friend I ever had. Not that my new cat is not it's just different. Russian Blue can cost near 1000$ but they are a healthy bread.

Not my cat but looked exactly the same.

If you can keep your cat as an indoor cat they live longer and it's much less stressful always wondering if they are OK.

Cats are kind gentle creatures who are very clean...as long as they use their litter box (and some of that is compelled by nature) they're fine. And keep anything important out of reach so they don't claw it! It's certain other species that if not properly house broken can well...end up breaking things in your house!

Now the smoke free home...VERY important as over time smoking will cause your stuff to get all icky yellow...yuk!!

I agree some people prefer outdoor as well hey to each his own as long as people are carrying for animals and loving them why should I judge them. At least the animal has a home.

Indeed indeed!!! Hence why I remain single and enjoy my hobbies the most I can. And I have all my home not just some little corner that I should be ''proud'' of having.

Always a chance you find a rare one but I rather find a rare coin all day every day.

And my pet is by far better and easier company. Always happy to see me.

So I took him in and he became my best friend for 16 years. Now I have a cat that I paid 50$ for st the SPCA and he is a great friend.
