Type Sets Can Be EVIL !!!

Why are they evil? Well, I've owned at least one type of coin in the 20th Century Type Set in circulated condition since I was a kid and never had any "issues" with 'em. BUT, when you get those awesome looking MS or PR coins in these slabs they make you want more and more and more and more and more....!!!! My 20th Century Type Set makes me want to start too many new sets!!!! THAT's why they are evil! image It's just like the Lays Potato Chip commercials...

Let's stop talking about this contest and chat some coins for the Holiday Weekend!

Which do you like best of the 20th Century?? (not necessarily what you collect, but what you like!)

Here are mine:

Mercs
Walkers
Indians
SLQ's

And, let’s make some trouble and go the other way...

Let's throw in some "IMO's" for LEAST as well:

SBA's (by a long-shot)
and I'm thinking they should change the FBL designation to FCL for Full Chin Lines image

Now, I'll really open a big can... "Imaginary" figures on the obverse vs Actual People...pretty much that simple isn't it??? (but, I still love Abe!) Remember, these are Opinions only…no “right or wrong”. No Modern vs "Super/PrettyAwesome/More Rare-Classic" bashing either...image And, no complaining that the only pretty moderns made nowadays are Commems or Bullion coins...nope, none of that...

ps...I have decided to very slowly join the Merc fun! Still have lots to do on the Lincolns...not gonna be easy to do both at the same time....image

Mercury dimes, Liberty and Buffalo nickels, and Walking Liberty halves and the Bicentennial reverses belong in the "best of."

Every dollar coin of the 20th century, most of the paint-by-numbers state quarters, and Roosies go into the "couldn't you have done better than that?" bin.

Yeah, it's the American way. I want it all! And it has to be better than everyone elses! And they must recognize and hail me for having better things than them!

That's one reason why I like the idea of a registry where all the coins you have are input and you can view your progress on the various sets that your coins relate to. In a way, that would be cooler. If I put in a 1946 S Washington, I could see that I have a partial 20th century type set, full type set, washington series, and probably a few others. I think it'd be neat. I've thought about writing my own program to do that for me.

They need some good .NET programmers at PCGS. They should put their registry database up as a web service to query from so we programmers could write our own custom solutions and things. It would diversify the field a lot, but also drive a lot of cool product ideas and possibilities.

  • For Moderns...Bicentennials by FAR...you bet!!!! I prominently display them in my Modern Set image
  • I am a type collector but if I was to ever do a series and I am sure one day I will there is only one choice for me. The most beautiful coin ever minted. Yes, you guessed it.

    "The STANDING LIBERTY QUARTER"

I have even considered putting my type set on hold once or twice to start a SLQ series.

the one I hate? I am going to catch a lot of flack for this but I can not help it.

I truly hate the Ugly "Lincoln Cent". It baffels me why so many people are drawn to them. I guess it is due to old timers growing up as kids and popping them in Whitman Folders. But I do dislike those coins.

Of course this is just my humble opinion.

Has there ever been a more American coin than the Indian Head/Bison Five-Cent? If only they had kept the textured fields and not insisted on lowering the relief ... SLQs, though, are a close second, even though I only have two nice ones for my type set and a partial circ set. Walkers third, Mercs fourth ... and this from a Jeff collector! Love the buggers, but not the most artistic of coins. If they had kept the more art deco look originally submitted, it would be different.
  • Hey, I collect Lincolns and I agree they aren't the prettiest of the designs. Many do have character and it's a "fun" series because you can make it super easy or super hard...something for everybody is why. It's pretty easy to complete a circulated set, but let's see you go MS65+ in RED!!!

What's this about "old timers"? I still have Whitmans...Oh, my, I didn't realize I was there already and I was born right in the middle of the SMS's....image

And the answer to that trivia question is??? (year)

(edited for link) Now THAT'S A LINCOLN!!!!!! Check This Out!

That makes you a 1966, 10 years my junior, and I can recall as a kid filling up Whitmans out of pocket change with my grandad when silver was still circulating...
  • TerpsRock,

I was born in 1965 and I don't classify myself as an old timer. But then again I never put pennies in a Whitman. I can remember getting old Buff nickels on ocassion in change.

My likes for 20th century type: Walking Liberty Halves, Standing Liberty quarters, $10 Indians, $20 St. Gaudens, Buffaloes, Mercs, and Lincolns (wheaties). Hmmm.... except for the Lincolns, these were all obsolete when I began collecting, but all but the gold could still be found in circulation. I didn't start with Whitman folders; my first (1955, I was 6 years old) was a Dansco album for Lincolns that started with 1930.

Bottom of the barrel: Roosevelt dimes, SBA's

Imaginary figures vs. real people: Give me Liberty, or give me.......a scenic design (not a building).

Terps: that '55 double die has a high grade and a hefty price tag, but I don't like the color of it. Maybe it's just the scan, but it has an "unnatural" look to it. I like older Lincolns for the variety of color and texture. Back in the '60's and '70's, I bought just about every pre- 1934 BU Lincoln the local dealers had in stock. Too bad they seldom had any of the tough dates.

    And yes, they're ALL addictive.

    TerpsRock,

Just remember -- if Type Collecting tempts you to collect a series, you then can't afford my Type coins -- Catch 22

When I made up my mind to collect 1792-1964 type set, I set up my goal. I am not going to collect what PCGS wants me to collect. My goal is not 100% PCGS defined completion. Also, to be a type set collector, I don't have to go for the best of the best. There is always a much room for one less grade coins (e.g., For Franklin 50c, there is a big gap in price between PR69DCAM and PR68DCAM). As long as I know what I am doing, the EVIL can't come close to me image

  • JC....now what'd ya have to go and bring PCGS into it...we're just talking pretty MS or PR coins here...image We all have different goals. Mine is to complete (I didn't say have the best, but "complete") a 20th Century Type Set, pick the one(s) I like best and build that set(s). And nobody said anything about having the best set...this thread's supposed to just be about what everybody likes image And, my point was simply that some are so pretty you just WANT more and more!!! I think we can all understand that.

KeithD - BTW, very impressive to do your's all in MS!

    TerpsRock,

It's more impressive to do it 100% in proof. The early proofs are very rare and expensive. I picked MS because I like toning and the post-50 dates are hard to find in high grade toned. The black and whites all look the same to me.

  • That's certainly true...but I'm taking the "easy" way out with the MS/PR Mix...What I specifically like about yours is that it's "competitive" even when you place it up against the undesignated (MS and PR mix) sets. Nice Set!

  • Rob,

You're right that the types are evil. I put a small set together from odds & ends, and I never give it a thought! Don't wanna go there! LOL image

    My 3 top choices are:

    1. SLQs (especially type ones! imageimage )
    2. Mercs
    2. Walkers
    2. Buffalos
    3. Commems and everything else! imageimageimage

    Enjoy the hunt for Mercs.
Just remember, when speakin' seriously of them, they should be referred to as "Winged Liberty Heads"! image

    Regards,

    Don
