Or is it too wide an area to cover in a book?

The Standard Catalogue of World Paper Money (SCWPM) is what most collectors use
You can purchase a downloaded copy or buy a used version from eBay or Amazon.
There is also 2 online resources: Bank Note Museum & the Banknote Index

Thank you.
On the good stuff the Standard Catalog is way, way low. Then other stuff it's too high. Must be a bear trying to make a catalog accurate with so many thousands of notes. I like to go on eBay and look at sold items. I also go on Heritage and look at past auction results.
All catalogues are just a guide towards a good starting point. On some nations **SCWPM **has a fairly decent ballpark start figure, while for other nations (particularly large nations with their own catalogues) - not so much.
I have found it very useful in learning about Modern & older series. I just enjoy have a hard copy at my disposal (rather than digital all the time). To each his own....
Yes, exercising due diligence by researching past past auction results is the ultimate way to find out what any particular series (or banknote) should sell for. Pus, we all have to factor in other variables which can affect fair market value.

If you do decide to use an online source, I highly recommend the Bank Note Museum, just click on the link. http://banknote.ws/
I mainly use the Heritage world coin archive.
At least it's current. Mostly.
The Banknote Book is another source. https://banknotebook.contentshelf.com/shop
Although it does not have the same coverage as the Standard Catalog, it is more accurate in identifying varieties and pricing.
