First the disclosure - I have boxes in my investment stash that are mentioned in this post (among lots of boxes). If I throw out an idea, I actually put my money behind it.

With the Super Bowl coming up, I suggest taking a look at 2013 football boxes. As most collectors know 2013 was a down year for the hobby. No top QB Rookies and LeVeon Bell has faded. However it is the rookie year for Travis Kelce and DeAndre Hopkins, two top offensive weapons. Boxes are a little harder find online outside of ebay but you can still find decent prices if you look hard enough. I was able to get a lot of mid-high products for less than $100. Make sure you check the checklist to see if the Kelce RC is on it, I was surprised he wasn't in a lot of products even though he was a 3rd round pick.

My favorite is base Topps hobby boxes. You can find these for a lot less than $100. Some of the more popular brands like Prizm, Topps Chrome and National Treasures are already expensive, so I would avoid those unless you get a great deal (especially on Chrome). I would focus on main hobby brands like Topps, Crown Royale, Certified, and Contenders. I generally avoid the unmemorable or low end brands like Museum, Strata, Prestige, and Score to buy and hold. Plus a lot of those brands have small sets and Kelce didn't make the cut (Topps Platinum has no Kelce). In my experience, the main hobby brands tend to lead values higher. I thought about the Upper Deck brands but the NFL uniform RCs are so much more popular than the college uniforms, that I can't justify the prices.

Take it for what it's worth. In this market, you really need to look at new ideas.
