I always thought the AU53 grade was shorthand for a coin that is AU yet unattractive. What about this one do you find "nice for the grade"?
AU53 is assigned for a certain level of wear. It has nothing to do with "attractive" or not. The coin in question has great skin, which is rare for a Seated dollar.
i bet it is a gunmetal gray lustrous low au and even those scanned images, i wouldn't be surprised to see that one in a higher-graded holder in the future.
a person would be doing well to put together an entire set of these with that look in au.

And really weak denticles on both sides, which I imagine is rare for an authentic Seated dollar.

I like it.
It looks original and has little wear for the grade.

Ok now I’m really worried about this. Notice the denticles?
