Are modern Topps SP's, SSP's, and variations the new 1990s inserts?
I was thinking about this today. I am a Cardinals team set collector. My main focus is Topps team sets including vintage test issues and inserts. Every year since 2009 Topps has included many image variations, print variations, and legend variations that are short printed and super short printed. I have every Cardinals variation that Topps put out during that time frame. Some of them are fairly inexpensive and can be had for under $10. However, some of the SSP's are very expensive and can be hard to find.
Also in this category are many variations from Topps Heritage. That is where most of the big money cards are. If you have ever gone after some of those Heritage Throwback Uniform variations, those can be very pricey. I have all of them except for two. I still need a 2014 Topps Heritage Adam Wainwright throwback and a 2014 Yadier Molina throwback. I didn't even know the Molina existed until I stumbled upon it last week. The asking price is over $900! I just paid $250 for a 2020 Topps Heritage Rangel Ravelo throwback variation.
My question for you guys is this - what do you see going forward these type of cards? For my collection, it really doesn't matter because I will go after them regardless, if I can afford it. Could these be the next "1990's inserts"? Some 1990's inserts can be gotten for little money while super rare cards go for stupid money. Many 1990's inserts are sought after by player collectors and team collectors. Michael Jordan inserts come to mind.
What do you think?
