Two cancelled 1996 Olympic Proof Silver Dollar Obverse Dies for sale:

The 1995-1996 Olympics held in Atlanta, Georgia also celebrated the centennial of the modern form of the Olympic Games.
The US Olympic Committee in partnership with the US Mint launched an overly-ambitious 32 coin program to support the games. A combination of high prices and a saturation of too much product drove the coin collecting public away from US Mint products. In a bid to support sagging sales, the US Mint decided to offer X cancelled dies for sale to the public for the first time ever. Unlike past US Mint cancelled dies that had their striking surfaces obliterated with a blowtorch that left little to no detail, these dies were delicately struck with a X that left most of the striking details intact.

Slightly less than 2,800 dies were offered for sale - unfortunately for me, my order was rejected because the dies sold out quickly. A collection of silver dollar dies would consist of ten dies; 5 from 1995 and 5 from 1996. Each year's set consist of four obverse dies and one reverse die.

  1. 1996 Olympic High Jump Silver Dollar Obverse Die, population: 217

Serial number: P6-646057
Proof surfaces are flawless without rust (specs on the image are dust).
There is some slight blemishes (not rust) on the cylinder walls of the die that do not affect the condition of the die.
No COA or velvet bag.

Price: $595 PayPal friends and family and shipped via Priority Mail with insurance

In a weird way, they are conservatively cancelled. That's a good thing. Peace Roy

Later on when they sold cancelled dies they rubbed off most of the design.
