Ugly Coins

Value is kinda subjective... some folks like lots of toning some like blast white... then you have the ugly coins... I have a few of them, like a 36-P MS67 Merc that I just purchased for my 34-45 set.

So, PCGS, as other grading services, provides a value as maybe a guideline/baseline... I think I answered my own question! I was going to ask if the 'value' remains the same, and ya just pay a premium over that listed value for a pretty coin... thoughts? What do you do?

Its a bit embarrassing to admit that I buy ugly coins, but I find it enjoyable building a set at a certain level, then after complete, searching to upgrade. I'm not as inclined to wait for the best coin as that may never come along... IDK. Are there others that feel this way?

Thanx!
Jeff

I try to buy for Price Guide minus 10% if possible. This leaves some room to break even/profit when reselling in the future.

I do not buy ugly coins, even as a hole filler. I'll wait for a good one to come along. The buying/selling spread in fees is too high to constantly be upgrading. That's not to say I never upgrade, sometimes a coin that didn't originally bother me, bothers me as I see more examples over time, or notice a mark/spot/toning I didn't notice at first... then it's all I can see.

But yes, take the Price Guide with a grain of salt. Better to look at the prices the coin sells for at auction and average those. PCGS has this information on their CoinFacts pages, which is very helpful. And even then, try not to pay top dollar unless the coin is a stunner.

    # 1 I like the blast white. Old school I guess.
    # 2 I don't buy ugly coins but I do enjoy building a set to a certain level then upgrade. As a result I completed a
set at ms66 then started the upgrade game. Wasn't my initial intention but now I have that set and another of
the same that is lacking 1 coin of a completed set @ ms67. Financially smart ? Absolutely not. But I'm happy
    with both sets.
    # 3 Have I paid price guide ? Yes on several occasions as I'm sure most have at least once. IMO depends on
    scarcity and appearance.
I've seen it posted many times here. Collect what YOU LIKE. I may add collect HOW you like.

If I may add, I'm a collector. Not a dealer. No intention of ever selling my collection. That's for my sons to figure out when I'm taking a dirt nap.

I'm almost thinking that it would be fun to have a full set of higher grade ugliest coins...
