My First Baseball Card Purchase in 28 Years.
Hi,
First off, I'm not a sports guy at all. I'm a coin guy. But once upon a time I was part of a generation of kids in the early 1990s who collected cards that are now practically worthless. I also even played hardball at that time, but I wasn't exactly a slugger in any remote sense. Part of the driver of all this was the success of the Toronto Blue Jays. Being Canadian, they were just a huge, huge deal back then. I went to those games, and saw those stars at SkyDome (which now may not be long for this world).
I watched game 6 of the 1993 World Series with my family, and when Joe Carter hit that walk off home run winning the series I was ecstatic. It was probably the most I'll ever care for sports in my life, probably more than when Canada finally won the Olympic gold medal in ice hockey in 2002 after a 50 year drought.
So, I wanted a Joe Carter autographed card. Had to be of him as a Jay, and preferably 1993. It also had to be an O-Pee-Chee card. Why? I'm from the town where OPC cards and candies were made, London Ontario. I used to consider them just knock-off Topps cards, so imagine my surprise years later seeing that they're actually desirable. Also, I just really wanted something in a PSA holder because I'm part of their sister company, PCGS.
I saw this on eBay and had to have it. Not exactly super high grade, but who cares? It's full of meaning for me!

i see you're a mod and please excuse my french on this one post, but that is cool as hell!
Absolutely love that story! Thank you for sharing it. My guy is Kent Hrbek who I saw when the Metrodome-dome-dome (monster truck voice) first opened up for the '82 season. Would be AWESOME to find a T-Rex card of him!
