88 wide am?

CoinscratchCoinscratch Posts: 8,878 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'm pretty sure it isn't and maybe there is just weakness in the right place to cause the FG to look so.
Isn't there another way to judge the FG by distance or thickness?
Thanks!

    I thought all 1988 and 1988 D's were Wide AM's?

@joeykoins I realize they’re all wide and that’s just a nickname but it actually seems like they’re closer together on the actual wide. But I thought there was another way to recognize the correct FG by the spacing because sometimes it’s hard to decipher. Thanks bud!

here are the two initials sets side by side

    .

    .

there is the "close FG" and the "far FG"

edit: the G in FG on the close FG has a horizontal and a descender on the vertical. far FG is sans serif

Wide AM - close FG and Centered "A" in States
Close AM - far FG and Left side of center "A" in States

1988 have Wide AM on all and Centered "A" in States on all

You're right, Bud. Esp. when the coin is in a rough condition. They're might be another way, but I'm not aware of it. I been searching for this variety for a while. I'm beginning to think that the "Wide AM" 1998, 1999 and the 2000's are easier to track down than this variety. :)

Best of luck dude! if I have turned over one I have turned over a half million.
For a while I just quit flipping them over unless they were high grade and that’s probably when I missed it :)

Somebody here called it a far FG once and that’s why I thought there was some different spacing between FG and the memorial building between the two.

OK, now I know that the WideAM isn't the issue but the FG, correct? Is the flat spot on the curve of the G, the difference or just the thinness of one vs the other? It's truly funny, on EBAY they list 6 for sale and all are raw but one PCGS. They all list them as FS-901WideAM's, yet only one shows a closeup of the FG(not the PCGS) the rest all show closeup's of the A M even the PCGS. Whoever named this error was inventive as the error will not be forgotten.

Thanks! My A looks center cut to me. Separately, now I see the distance between the bottom of the G and the Memorial but I will have to compare mine to another one of mine to judge the distance.
Problem on the serif is it gets distorted or has a weak strike.
All that being said, if I look at the G on the far/wide variety it makes a distinctive looking arrow pointing NE however if not distorted.
