SOLD The Washington Token/F.B. Orr struck over an 1853 With Arrows Seated Liberty Dime PCGS MS63ex. Q. David Bowers Collection $3300

For sale here is an amazing rarity that will appeal to Civil War Token collectors, dime specialists, and Washingtonia enthusiasts alike. Tokens of this era were commonly struck over US small cents for two reasons:
1. At 19mm, there planchet size was perfect for overstriking merchant storecards, and
2. To create numismatic delicacies in Copper-Nickel

The overwhelming majority of these overstrikes are on Indian Head cents from the year 1863. Unsurprisingly, that was the year Civil War tokens were in their biggest production/use.

It is an uncommon event to find a Civil War token struck over a US dime. They are many, many times rarer than their US Cent counterparts. With Dave Bowers selling off his storied collection over the last 2 years, we've seen an unprecedented opportunity to acquire some amazing pieces which have been off the market for decades. Many were auctioned off at StacksBowers in October in the Tampa Collection. They were all ex-Bowers and sold on the low end of $3240 and the high end at $5280, before shipping and tax was added.

Here presents another opportunity to acquire a token from Q. David Bowers' famous reference set. I purchased it directly from him about a year ago now. It is a stunner, with great detail of the undertype showing on both sides.

Thank you for looking!

You're welcome! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. It really is an amazing overstrike, and you'll be happy knowing it came not only from the collection of QDB, but John J. Ford, Jr. and FCC Boyd before him.

Enjoy and thank you for your purchase,
    Dennis
