1986 Topps Baseball

This may sound like a dumb question, so I apologize in advance. I am a collector of 80’s cards, and two cards that I absolutely covet in a 10 are pretty much unicorns in this set. I am in no way a pro, so I use this forum mostly to read and learn from the rest of you guys that know this industry inside out. Couldn’t find much info on this set in general, and as far as the 80’s go, I think it’s still undervalued.

Eric Davis #28 gems out at 4/218
Ryne Sandberg #690 8/559

Why are these two in particular so much more scarce? I get the black borders on these cards make the cards very vulnerable, but these two cards specifically seem to really be that much more difficult to grade out at a 10? Any ideas as to why?

1986 Topps was horrendous (as many years were from this era) IRT quality control. 1986 Topps especially so. I don't know how many times I've heard guys say they broke a whole rack or wax case of this stuff and couldn't find even one 10 worthy card of ANYBODY. Let alone Stars / HOF'ers

  • Both cards were on the edge of the sheet. Davis in particular was on one of the corners.

I won't say I'm an expert, but I bought 3 rack cases of these 8 years ago or so, and submitted a bunch. Hit multiple 10's, 2 of which were Nolan Ryan's that paid for my purchase. It is my understanding that the biggest issue by far is with printing. I have 20 centered Ryne Sandberg's. But I didn't get one that did not have any of those red print dots on the front. His hat and jersey are usually where they are found. You may want to research more, but I subbed probably 7 Sandbergs that were all perfect IMO other than those print dots, and not one of them came back as even a 9. Every one was an 8.

I cannot hit curveball. Straightball I hit it very much. Curveball, bats are afraid.
