Didn't Like the Registry Contest -- Look Here

OK, several people have expressed disgust at the contest, and I would like some help. I'm trying to make a comprehensive list of every set that was registered 100% over the weekend, and since I don't follow every category, need your help. This is the only one I know about from the sets that I follow -- please PM me with the details of every set that you saw registered for the first time over the weekend and I will add it to the list.

    Keith,

Do you mean 0% to 100%? In other words, a set that didn't exist prior to the weekend? If so, only one in the Kennedy proofs. BPW KENNEDY'S debuting at #9.

Yes, Russ, there is so much furor over people registering sets that I want to see how many 100% sets we can come up with. And since this is a competition, I only want to know the ones that came in at #5 or higher.

That would make it zero in JFK proofs then. Personally, I think it's much ado about nothing.

    Russ,

I did a brief scan of the sets I play in (20th Century Type, Complete Type, and related) and found just the one set listed. With all the furor and ranting on the boards, I expected to see dozens of #1 Sets that were added in the past three or four days.

Keith: In the series in which I am most active, there were no last-minute complete sets added in the four Jefferson five-cent categories. The usual suspects -- and great collectors -- remained at the top in all four. There was some addition and upgrading of coins, sure, but the top five in each category are long-time registrants.

I entered my Bust Dime set over the weekend. There is just one other set that has 1 coin. Mine has 6. So I didn't see it as a problem. Neither one of us qualifies for any kind of an award as I understand it because of the percentage. Didn't do it to try and snipe anything. I actually waited a while to see if the other guy was going to add to his set, so I could come in at #2. Since he didn't I went ahead and entered mine. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

  • I, for one, didn't even enter an upgrade during the closing hours--didn't have any. Long term, I will be continually upgrading and adding to my registry sets because it is fun--not because of an award. I like the competition and will remain in the "hunt" as long as I can afford to.image

    Fletch:

I totally agree. I would have been very happy to add a bunch of coins this last weekend. But I would be exactly precisely as happy to add the identical coins this next weekend! Unfortunately, my budget precludes adding a bunch of coins, but the point is that over the long haul I will have extra funds (or so I hope) so I will be adding coins. But I add because I want to, not because of a competition.

Yea I Did Not Like the Contest Either.

Tried to Enter My Dime Right at the Last moment to Secure a #23 Ranking with the # 2 Set but the System Did Not Recognize the Certificate Number. It was one of Those 500 numbers. So I Emailed BJ and asked What The Heck is Going On ?? She Emailed Back and Said She would Extend the Entering Period for 12 Hours. I was Relieved.

Well later on ,after it was Supposed to be Fixed, I tried Again !!! Alas the Dam thing Still would Not Enter. Emailed BJ again but this Time she said: Ken I just Can Not Extend the Deadline again to Get Your Set into the # 23 Slot.

Crap was I Pised or What ?? Dam PCGS, Dam People, Could Not get Anything Right if they Had Too.

Check It Out. Certificate # 5004494. Bum Number that Really Bummed Me Out. Dam I Wanted that Number 23 Slot. Well Maybe Next Year.

OK, this thread has been around for long enough --

My point in posting this is that there were very few #1 sets registered in the last couple of days of competition, just some tweaks and upgrades.

So all the screaming about deadlines being extended, big players being catered to by PCGS, or stealth sets, seems pretty pointless. For 99% of the sets in the Registry, the paper "#1 certificate" will go to the same person who had the #1 set last month.

Congratulations to any person who registered nice sets over the last couple of days. Maybe this board can get back to the previous business that we had been discussing: cordially discussing the merits of the coins we love.

    • This is the way I look at it:

I entered 6 coins to my set over the weekend but it was only because I picked some up at the expo and the others finally arrived in the mail! As far as a contest, who cares? Really, what's the big deal?

I am putting my set together because I enjoy them. They make me feel good inside! To find a very eye appealing nicely toned early date coin is exciting! That's what this hobby is all about. Enjoyment not aggrevationimage

If your putting a registry set together for the competitive aspect, then you need to find a different hobby! Because you don't enjoy coin collecting!

If someone's set is better than yours and it was entered at the last minute, it would still be better than yours if it was entered a week earlier.

So in ending.....Quit sweating the small stuff!

I know how much you enjoy turning a colorfully toned Mercury dime to catch the light and watch the rainbow of colors. What's in a number...23?image
