Champions of Golf - Masters Collection

Hey guys,
I'm new to golf collecting and I'm looking to get my hands on a Champions of Golf box. However, I'm looking to get more information on those boxes, at it seems like there are three versions of them.

I have found these three different versions on ebay:
1. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Grand-Slam-Ventures-Champions-Of-Golf-Masters-Collection-Box-1934-1997/113720912149?epid=1702078959&hash=item1a7a4b6915:g:A6IAAOSwXixctn7D
2. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/1997-CHAMPIONS-OF-GOLF-THE-MASTERS-COLLECTION-TIGER-WOODS-GOLF-CARDS-NEW-SEALED/324401980050?hash=item4b87dd6292:g:500AAOSwcU5fsuyW&autorefresh=true
3. https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Tiger-Woods-1997-RC-Champions-Of-Golf-Masters-Collection-Sale-2-250-Must-Buy-2/224235474508?_trkparms=aid=1110009&algo=SPLICE.COMPLISTINGS&ao=1&asc=20200220094952&meid=a8e1f23c41524bb7b2658e38fdb9de1c&pid=100008&rk=1&rkt=12&mehot=lo&sd=324401980050&itm=224235474508&pmt=1&noa=0&pg=2047675&algv=default&_trksid=p2047675.c100008.m2219

From what I understand, the third link is from the 1997-1999 set, which makes the Tiger Woods RC less valuable. However, I don't understand the difference between the first link and the second link (especially the price difference). Can someone help me out?

Matt

    1. The 1997 set
    2. Loose cellos from the 1997 or 1998 set, just no outer box
    3. The 1998 set (same cellos inside as the 1997 set w/O'Meara in a separate yellow envelope)

There is zero difference between the Tiger card from the 1997 or 1998 base sets. The 1993-1996 sets did not come boxed, just double wide cover & back cards cello wrapped over the two cello bricks. If purchasing to open, I can't recommend highly enough to avoid. The high gloss and tight cello has made all of the cards stick together over the years and with the black borders the cards are impossible to separate without damage.

  • Thank you so much! Is there absolutely no difference between the 1997 & 1998 set, or is the copyright in the bottom back of the card different (1997 copyright versus 1998)?

Copyrights didn't change from the 1993 set for all the cards up to that point, there's one card each from 1994-1998 that has a new copyright (the latest winner). So regardless of whether you pick up a 1997 or 1998 set, the Tiger has a 1997 copyright, all the Nicklaus/Palmer/etc. from the initial 1993 set have a 1993 copyright in all releases from 1993-1998.

  • Wow, thank you so much, that is very valuable information I wouldn't have been able to find anywhere! Thanks again, that really helps!

Welcome and you're welcome! I've got a long writeup on another site I'll have to dig up about all the releases of this set.
