Rare 1868 Shield Nickel Reverse of 68 FS905 for sale
Just back from PCGS in the NFC enabled slab. A 1868 Shield nickel graded AU53. This nickel has the reverse of 1868 with the FS-905 designation. What that means is that none of the reverse letters are "broken" from die wear. The 1868 reverse can be easily determined by looking at the tip of the star on the reverse that points to the "M" in AMERICA. The 1867 reverse has the star pointing between the "A" and "M" of AMERICA. There are only 3 coins at this level and a total of 25 coins in ALL GRADES with only 2 in mint state. According to several sources, the reverse of 1868, as compared to the reverse of 1867 on this coin, makes up 10% of the total mintage of that year. Of that 10%, only 1% or less are comprised of the non-broken letter variety identified as FS-905 (002.98). The coin is rare enough that PCGS doesn't even list a price in its price guide for this variety. I'm asking $550 delivered for this coin. Check out the pictures below and send a PM if interested.
Thanks,
