SOLD - 1875-S Twenty Cent Piece MS65+ PCGS w/CAC, PCGS Pop only 8
My price had been reduced on the BS&T, but it did not sell, so it’s now listed as Lot #299 in the current Legend Regency Auction. SOLD for $3,877 including their 17.5% buyers fee.
There have been 221 1875-S Twenty Cent Pieces graded MS65 or MS65+ by PCGS. Of those 221, only eight merit the "+". This is one of those eight!
NGC has graded 206 of these as either MS65 or MS65+ or MS65*. Out of the overall total by PCGS and NGC of 427 in these grades, only 55 merit the coveted CAC sticker (only 12.9%). At this price point, you'd figure almost all were sent to CAC. For those without a CAC, you should ask yourself why it doesn't have one?
This coin has smooth frosty surfaces that are toned in sandy-gold iridescence that is a bit bolder on the reverse, Sharply struck throughout, a feature not often seen in circulation strike coins of this type, with strong technical quality AND outstanding eye appeal. This coin is uncommonly well preserved, and is of further significance from having been struck from the die pairing that Brunner and Frost state was also used to strike the branch mint Proofs. But this coin is NOT Proof.
For Variety collectors, this is BF-1, Rarity 3.
I bought this MS65+ in October 2018 for $5,040.
Please also look at my Lot #230 1828 Coronet/Matron Large Cent MS65BN graded by PCGS with a CAC, and also my Lot #311 1911 Proof Barber Quarter PR67CAM graded by PCGS, with a CAC.

I just love the eagle on those! Second favorite to the flying eagle cent/gobrecht dollar eagles. Unfortunately I already have one of these, well it's only AU 50 or so! Yours is very nice but not in my type set grade or dollar value range.

I have been wrong before (ask @astrorat ), but Legend's description says this is from tbe BMP dies BF-1, but it sure looks like the scarcer BF-2 to me.
Good luck!
I bought this from a Stacks auction (2-1/2 yesrs ago), and that is what THEIR description said. My guess is that Legends copied that. I don't know if Stacks was correct or not.

The BF-1 attribution is correct. The image below is an enlargement of the TrueView image. The lighting does not show the die chip off the pole very well (just below Liberty's hand). Thus, the coin was struck from the dies used for the Branch Mint Proofs. Also, the date alignment is slightly different from the BF-2. I like the strike-through next to star 7. Again ... that's a great coin.

I sometimes amaze myself about how consistently I missattribute these.
The pole die chip is so much smaller than my BF-1 and all the BMP and properly attributed BF-1's I've seen, and the angle of her pinkie and the very late die stage of the reverse fooled me.
But I always learn.

Wow, the 66 in your reg set is lights-out nice. Good luck with this one.
Thanks for your kind words. Regardless of the result, I think Legend does an excellent overall job.

Stunning collection you have assembled!!!
Thanks for your kind words. Believe it or not, the three coins I have for sale in the Legends auction ending Wednesday night have been replaced in my collection by three nice coins graded higher.

You certainly enjoy this "hobby". Obviously you must have great knowledge of coins you acquired over many years and yes, great taste. What started you off in this and what kept you going for all these years?
btw I am going to bookmark your registry just so I can look at an amazing collection anytime I want!
Again, you are so very kind.
I started out like many of us, with a modest Basic Type Set. Once PCGS started in the mid to late 1980's, I got my coins slabbed. Once CAC started around 2007 or so, I became one of the very first Collector Submitters, and submitted my coins to CAC. Around 75% "passed". I then sold those that didn't pass as I found nice replacements that got (or had) CAC's.
I then started a PCGS Registry Basic U.S. Design Set. About five years ago my disposable income increased somewhat (absolutely nowhere near the presumed income of those like D.L. Hansen and Black Cat, who are ahead of me in rankings. My income can fit on their pinky nail, lol). I then started upgrading coins to where they are now, and expanded to other Type Sets, such as two different Dansco 7070 digital sets (one without Gold, the other with Gold).
Thanks.

Once you had the coin bug you grew it and grew it well. I do like how you enjoy upping the quality even though most would be more than fine with the coins you upgraded. I have little doubt that a major challenge is involved finding such coins. You have as stunning collection that I find wonderful as well as amazing!
Thanks for the answer,
Jim
Jim - Again, I am humbled by your true appreciation of my efforts.
Have a nice weekend.
