1991 overpolished die?

This coin was a 1991 penny found in a bank roll hunted for around the time the coin shortage started. It looks like an overpolished die given that the second “1” in 1991 is faded but the rest of the coin is in good condition. The reverse has interesting wear as well - thoughts?

I’d say struck through a thin layer of grease.

Never thought of that myself, but makes sense now that you mention it.

I’ve had similar pieces before. I personally like them but they aren’t worth much. Like small die clashes. Cool but generally not worth anything extra.

Looks like grease was at work.

  • Good to know, thanks for the help.

Could be grease but the sharp thin 9 also makes me think polished die.

A small amount of grease or machinery oil imo
