What can you tell me about the Excalibur collection?

https://www.pcgs.com/news/the-excalibur-collection

I see what was in it and when it was sold. I see pieces popping up from time to time; HA, ebay. Going by the NGC cert, many, if not all were submitted together as in 1777777-xxx.

Who was behind the collection (I assume it was not King Arthur), how long ago was the set put together, and any idea as to why they unloaded it all at once via Stacks in 2004. Anyone have the catalog?

You can read the catalog on the Newman Numismatic Portal.
On page 143 is a brief description of the collection; it does not identify the collector.

P.S. To find an auction catalog on the Newman Numismatic Portal:

    1. On google, search for Newman Numismatic Portal . This will get you to the main page.
    2. Hover your mouse on LIBRARY on the menu across the top of the page.
This will cause a list of choices to appear below.
    3. Choose Auction Companies from this list of choices.
    4. You then have an alphabetic list of auction companies to choose from:
      https://nnp.wustl.edu/library/auctioncompanies
    5. I chose Bowers & Merena // B&M ( 1983 - 2011 )
    6. Then I clicked on the year 2005, and saw the January 2005 catalog mentioned in the story you linked.

All of the coins are rock solid for the grade. So far, anybody who's tried to pull a higher grade has failed. There was a round table discussion about it a few years ago. /s :Do:)
