My 37 card submission popped! Included pre-grade pics

Here are the grades for my submission. I was hoping for 8’s or better, but knew I’d get some less. That’s ok! The biggest highlight for me though is the bob Gibson! Super pumped for the 9!

Congrats on the Gibson!! Nice grade on the Marichal as well. That min size in the Sparky stinks. Thanks for sharing. Very nice cards.

Congratulations! Nice results, especially on the Gibson. I vaguely recall that maybe you mentioned somewhere that at least some of those were Greg Morris pickups. Is that correct?

Yep, most all of them are. I also purchased a bunch in a private sale too. I paid about 180$ for the Gibson raw.

Congrats on landing that Gibson. Wow!!! An amazing accomplishment to land so many 8's and 9's for 71's.

Congrats, some real black beauties you have there!

@Rofles I've always been very pleased with my Greg Morris purchases. I have filled and upgraded a lot of raw sets with some really nice specimens from his auctions. I wish you continued good luck in your pursuit, and the motivation to keep after it. The further along you get, the harder it is.

I finished up a 1975 Topps set in PSA 8+ in about 3 years, but it's a popularly collected set with only a 660 cards within one series, so was a relatively easy pursuit. I was laser focused and most of my budget went towards making progress on the set. The pursuit of my last 5 or 10 cards consumed me, though. I was constantly checking eBay for new listings and the feeling of getting that last card was both elation and sadness. Happy that I was done with it, but also sad that I was done with it. What now?

I've just been kind of meandering along on a 1981 Topps set in PSA 9+ for about 7 or 8 years. That's a 726 card set, and I'm just past 75 percent complete. Not a lot of people really collect that set, compared to some other years, so there's not as much product submitted that would result in extra slabs floating around on eBay. There are some really low pops/top pop 9s in the 81s, too, and when the time comes, I may end up lowering my standards and add a few 8s just to finish. We'll see. I'm in no rush, really. I have a lot of other things that I collect right now, and I haven't been nearly as focused on it as I was the 75 set, so new additions to the 81 set have really slowed down for me there.

The 71s are an even bigger set at 752. I don't really pursue those very much at all, but have managed to get to about 11 percent complete with mostly 6s and 7s and a handful of 8s. For me, the 71s have almost exclusively been impulse purchases once I've bought something else from a seller, and whenever they're offering combined/free shipping for additional items, I browse what else they have. I'm not sure if I'm ever going to really pursue completing the set, I just kind of accumulate the slabbed ones to go along with my raw 71 sets, in the back of my mind as backup crack out possibilities to upgrade my albums. Blasphemy, I know!

Those 71 high numbers are going to make you swallow hard when it comes time to add them. I've finished up 2 raw 1971 sets, in mostly mid/mid-high grade with some high grade examples mixed in...

(I've said it before in other threads, but ultra pro platinum pages seem to work some kind of magic on raw sets that you don't get with other page brands. They really put a shine on raw cards with flaws.)

...It was amazing at times seeing what the prices of some of those 71 high numbers would sell for raw, let alone graded, and not really even in that great of shape. Nowhere near as nice as the ones you picked up. And if it was a Greg Morris auction?...sometimes the prices on his beauties would get downright crazy!!! He definitely has a loyal following, but as you have proven with your submissions, the quality of his inventory shows that devotion is indeed deserved.

I look forward to following your progress. I check in on your 71 thread on the registry forum, too. I look forward to seeing you post scans of your successes in their new slabs. Congratulations again on your results, and especially the Gibson!

Nothing like a $1500 card to make those 7s palatable! 😂

Fantastic results. A $180 purchase turns into a $1500 black beauty 9. God bless America. The 6s were unavoidable. Great results !

    @countdouglas
I’m an avid buyer on Greg Morris; you can find some great prices usually at a fraction of almost anyone else!
Thank you!! I am having the time of my life collecting these! It’s a blast! I enjoy sharing my journey with everyone!

Thx! I sent in what I thought was the best of the best of my raw collection so I was hoping for a little better, but I’m still thrilled!

Thanks for posting the pics, some of those 71 cards I've never seen before especially
Cookie Rojas, what a great looking action shot!
As an old Royals fan I still remember him, he was very popular when he played for the Royals.

Crazy that Gibson would sell for $180 raw with the odds of raw 71s being recolored or altered in some way so high.

Gibson grade is outstanding but I am assuming you were hoping for better on a lot of the others. I know that you cannot tell everything from just a front scan but the majority of those cards look nicer than 6s and 7s. That being said it is how it goes as of late.

Congrats on the 9s. Very tough to get those. Usually the small chip on the edge of the Decker would knock it down to an 8 but I've also had one or two cases where a grader treated me well. The 6's and 7's are the cost of entry. I don't think I've ever submitted a batch of '71s without getting a fair amount of 7's and some 5's and 6's as well...no matter how strictly I prescreen them.

  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭✭✭

I'll also add the '71s have really exploded in value recently. I'm going through and updating the pricing of my set as we speak. I haven't gotten to the high numbers yet but 1-600 has gone up about 50% since I last logged in VCP values in 2012.

They were a bit lower than I expected but that’s ok. It’s easy to miss things, and I believe that, myself included, A LOT of people don’t bother with checking for any defects on the BACK of the card. So perhaps I missed something there. It’s all good. I can only imagine how much stress the graders are under not only to be accurate but to get caught up on all this!

You’re absolutely right! I watched a PSA 8 Yaz sell last night for 300! I just bought my PSA 8 Yaz for $130 a couple months ago. Almost if not all 9’s now easily go for a 100-150$ Now.

The cards all look really good!
