the characters that can be rendered on a computer have expanded to most of the world's languages via unicode. unicode also has symbols and the emojis you see. 💴 which is a "symbol" in a "character set" instead of an uploaded picture.

@MsMorrisine is absolutely right. There are also text versions of emojis and other things in Unicode. If you use windows, you can use the built in charmap app to explore all the symbols in any given font.
