Help - Screwball EBay return please give me your take.

First returns are very infrequent from buyers. A buyer initiated a return on a $65 slabbed coin saying he misread the label, etc thinking it was one point higher in grade, his mistake. Tracking has been sent to me. Not expected until Sat. I don’t refund until I receive item back.

Now he says (message thru eBay) he sent me the wrong coin and will I return return it. Fine. I then asked him what is the status of mine as this not in his message. He replied he sent it to another seller (mixup). So he returns 2 within a short period. Picky seller doing lots of buys / returns or what?

I don’t plan on refunding him until I get mine back. Wth is wrong with these people? My concern - a forced refund on mine thru eBay before I get mine back. The hassle of shipping the other back to him, risk of loss.

When something screwball like this happens makes me suspicious.

What do you think?

I don’t know why it matters what anyone thinks. Neither you nor anyone here can know the buyer’s state of mind. And you’ve already decided your course of action, as long as you have a choice.

Block him as soon as you get your coin back. He is a "buyer?" you don't need.

Two purchases, two returns - smells funny to me. What is the buyers feedback record and time on EBay?

We have no idea how many other purchases or returns he’s had.

It's a pity there's no way to track a buyer's reliability- you know, like some sort of rating system that would allow eBay members to alert other members about this sort of thing, should it appear to be a recurring issue. ;)

Smells a little scammy to me. Also, please out the buyer when you're whole. Thx

He has been on bay since 2018. Fb of 65 / 100 pct positive. No negs.

Would deduce not a seller. Could be frequent returner. I would wager many sellers like me give them positive payment fb after printing shipping label.

Yes it smells (very) funny. He did tell me the other item within $5 of mine and asked me if I would be interested in it told him don’t know what it is just want clean up deal.

No we don’t know his total activity but from existing data and communication (2 returns within 2 days or so) we have a good audit sample draw some educated projections. My conclusion block him ASAP.

Frankly I might be open to taking the other guys coin if he is willing take mine saving both of us the hassle of a return even if it costs me a few bucks.

Unless he's a seller or has been on eBay since before 2008 or so, it's not possible for him to have any negs.

are all communications taking place via ebay messaging or is it going via regular email?

ebay can read ebay messages and will consider the contents during a claim process.

I feel for you. I have 2 different buyers making strange claims.
I hardly ever have any problems so it is kinda strange to get 2 at once.

Care to share the ebay user ID?

Although this is true, they won't necessarily act on what they read. And they might act contrary to their posted policy. Unless you're a big seller with a dedicated customer service rep, it's a crapshoot.

In the end, stay your course and wait for the return. Worst case, $65 lost and you can block him. Part of selling on ebay is that these will happen occasionally, if this is only $65, not really so bad, except hassle and time lost.

Yes it’s better with this one than same problem with a recent $900 item where sale went smoothly.

Returns can be a pain, and absolutely you should not refund until you get the item you shipped back and ebay should back you up on that. I did not fully read your post initially as not a simple return but an aggravated one.

Is the coin he sent you by mistake of higher or lower value? This sounds very sketchy to me. If you send the wrong coin back to him, he will still get his refund because DC will show you received it first.

According to him the coin returned to me $5 higher. But your correct. eBay would see the tracking number for the return was received and refund him? I better cal eBay and explain to them. The guy gave a sleazy reason for his return that he only buys MS70 not MS 69. I had a 70 of the same issue he did not buy it.. Now this stuff he he got mixed up on the returns. My coin was properly described no reason for him to make a mistake buying.

Is this thing a sham by him screw 2 people. It is a double irritating situation. I could get screwed on this. I will call eBay. $65 is not chump change to me it buys a weeks supply of groceries or more.

Happened to me before. PO scanned the package as "delivered" but it wasn't put in my PO box until the next day. eBay refunded the buyer before I was able to retrieve the package.

    Sounds fishy to me :o
I would take Airplanenut's advice and call eBay ASAP so you get on top of it now.

If they take my money before I get mine back then I will keep the one he sent me and work something out w the other guy if if there is really a difference. Not gonna let them cheat me.....For all I know the package could be full of rocks...and he could be BS about the other guy if that’s even true.

I was already ticked about his sleazy reason for the return and now this other stuff.

use ebay messages to communicate, don't use plain email.

Cougar could be thinking this is an established scam that he doesn’t know about and others have dealt with already.

We could debate the buyers state of mind all day but my concern there is a third party involved / eBay who could play a trump card forcing a refund solely based on tracking.

Is it a scam - sure it’s a strong possibility considering the strange coincidental factors. Reminds me of the guy on the plane from Newark to Houston (1998) packed flight about to take off sitting next to me saying “I am a minister and we are going to my wife fathers funeral she is sitting 5 rows back could you trade off with her?” I turned around a nice looking lady smiled at me possibly anticipating I would be a good fellow and trade off. I had a briefcase crammed full of slabbed coins (had setup at show) in the overhead that trying move it out of question. I told him “my work is up there not leaving it. Shall I get the stewardess?” He said no and not a word out of him after that then 3.5 hr sitting next to that bozo on the flight back. After landing I got my bc and got the heck outta there fast, watching my back.

I think he is trying to scam you. The return is going to show as delivered and you have something like 3-5 days to refund him or Ebay will. He is wanting you to ship the wrong coin back to him within that period and then he will open a claim or get refunded and gets to keep your coin.

no scam, you have a message from him saying he sent the wrong coin back to you. Ebay has access to that message. When you recieve it simply state in the open case that you received the wrong coin and will provide refund upon return of the correct coin.

If you refuse the package, does it show up that way on the tracking? I mean that way you would have proof that you never received whatever happens to be in the box that the "buyer" sent.

  • 1Mike11Mike1 Posts: 4,416 ✭✭✭✭✭

Send him a cheap widget and email him and say "oh rats, I sent the wrong coin, can you send it back?". If he asks about his coin you can tell him you sent it to Tanzania. :D j/k. I wouldn't send anything back to this buyer until you receive your original coin back.

If you have a PO box, the package gets scanned before it goes in the box. You could probably take it to the counter to refuse it, but it will already show as "delivered" by then.

I got message his coin received at my POB. I would be open to solution that makes all 3 players happy. So I need go get coin look at it contact the other parties see what will work refund buyer, other dealer refunds buyer and if any differential I would pay a few bucks to the other seller just get this off field. My item slabbed world Pcgs 69 Mexico onza my cost $45 sale amount $65. If I refuse return or send that item back I have zero and eBay could ding me for the $65. Or I could report a problem to ebay. In researching this issue w google indication was eBay sided with buyer.....based on input from others. A real mess. At a show I sell this material at $5-$10 over cost just to move it for cash flow. I may sound harsh here but at a show I just want move it most of time even if just make a few bucks.

At a local show my max potential loss is the table fee. Sales Gross margin and purchases below bid (bid less cost) usually exceed this.
