Toning on a particular type of coin

I found that about half or maybe 60% of all AU/UNC examples of this China silver dollar type have this type of uneven peripheral toning on them. Would love to get your insight on how this could be formed, is it due to oil/residual from the mint/die surface, or maybe interesting storage condition after they were struck?

    Welcome to the forum! I have no idea if these coins have a particular reason for the toning, ignorant on Chinese coinage, sorry.
