Ripping 89 Fleer Hoops ....with Pics. MJ appears....

balco758balco758 Posts: 1,314 ✭✭✭✭✭

Have some free time next week and looking for good ideas For box to rip. Budget ~$750 and ROI not a major factor. Was thinking of 89 F hoops but not sure if # MJs per box. Anyone know?

Other ideas? A bit bored of 81-83 T baseball. Single packs are less fun because there is only 1 pack to open. Maybe 84 Donruss for a bit more $$

Love some ideas. Thx

Steve

89/90 Fleer basketball yield 3-4 of each card on average, so always a fun rip. If spending roughly $750, I would vote for:

    • 87 Fleer Baseball (Bonds RC, Bo RC, Larkin RC, Clark RC)
    • 85 Donruss Baseball (Clemens RC, Puckett RC, Gooden RC, Davis RC, Hershiser RC)
    • 89 Fleer Basketball (MJ, MJ and MJ!!!)

Always fun to hunt for those key rookies!

Thanks guys. I have done an 85 FB and damn the borders are tough - even for a nice BBCE box. The 89 F hoops is real tempting even though I expect keeping it sealed is the better longer term play.

Any other ideas if I went up to 1k-1500?

I have an 84D unopened box that I bought from Dave and Adams available if that's what you decide on.

Hmm that is a fun question, some mixing it up options especially if you go up in price:

    • 89 upper deck low fasc + 1998 topps chrome basketball
    • 1979 topps football
    • 1984 topps football
    • 1992 bowman baseball + 1997 topps chrome basketball
    • 1984 topps baseball + 2015 prizm basketball
    • 2004 topps chrome football + 1983 topps football

    Thanks guys

79 football is nicely priced but aside from Earl and Ozzie not a ton of value. Fun though and old!

I am down to 3 and will choose 2 — 89 UD, 97 Chrome and 89 Fleer hoops.

    Ideas still welcome.

Will rip and post pics week after next.

Approx $700 to 750 or so would get you in range for a 2005 UD hockey series 1 box. If spending more, then grab a series 2 box along with it.

could also get a few vending boxes from 1985 for the $700

What about the older boxes from late 1990s and early 2000s with autograph inserts of older HOF players? Is there any certain sport/brand/year that would be ideal for that? I see some of those unopened boxes can be pricey.

Honestly I shy away from most of the modern / insert / prizm this and prism that. Just can’t get excited about all the variations.

I often revert to pre-83 as its my era as a teenage collector. I can get my arms about the 89 Hoops due to the MJ factor. The 85 BB feels a bit blah and 89 UD is tricky to love as there are 50,000 PSA 9 and 10s of Junior.

Gonna get the 89 hoops and still deciding. Have raised the budget to 1,500 total.

Rodman is nice. Centering not so bad. Trying hard to see the front and back cards before opening...not easy.

Great news is these just popped from pack 4. Bummer news is they were top and bottom cards but it was impossible to see them. That would have made a nice pack to have graded.

Half way done. Nice cards. Some bit OC. Few have the red color bleed. Highly recommend this for a good value / high enjoyment factor. Doesn’t break the bank.

I am no expert on this series but the darkness seems to be just the way the card is. All 3 of them so far are look the same.

    Final shots
of all the top cards. 4 MJs, 4 MJ stickers, and 3-4 of all the rest. Will need to take sometime to see what’s worth a sub, but a few for sure.
    This was great fun.

The Charles Barkley in this set is my favorite! Glad I bought a 10 when I did though!

Thanks for sharing the cool rip. Looking forward to seeing the ones you choose to sub. And yes, all MJ from this year have the black tint two tone on the photo. That has always driven me a bit crazy about this card. Not sure why Fleer put the filter on only half the card.
