still only collect vintage unopened, but i know there are a couple major factors on deciding whether to hold or open modern:
if there are redemptions, they have expired and the big'uns have been hit, just rip it.
if there aren't redemptions, live autos possible and the major hits haven't surfaced, keep sealed.
if bricked a product, might as well keep sealed. if you sell, notate the possibility of such.
I think of it this way: invest in stocks and precious metals, collect cards. there has been a huge run up on values in the last 6 months. we have yet to see if it is a bubble or a new norm. if it is a bubble, i would hate to be left holding the bag if I were trying to invest.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
Thanks everyone for the kind words and thanks for making me feel welcome here with my questions.
Dirty Harry answered your question.
"Uh uh. I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk? "
haha. Thats about it for me. Once the value of the unopened pack exceeds the value of the likely content I find it hard to open as well. If there are multiple future hall of fame rookie cards available in the pack I'm keeping it sealed as well. No hall of famers, or just 1, and I'm more likely to open it.
Good luck on what ever you decide, if you rip I hope you get a big HIt !

I would open. 2013 contenders has low growth opportunities. For 2020 you are better off buying a base product like Donruss for future potential. Contenders is my least favorite mid-high product, if you don't pull a big rookie auto it is almost always a complete loss since there are no base rookies. I think that is why the price hasn't really moved.
