What happened ?

I’m more a precious metal guy than sports cards, but I just happened to notice on eBay that 2nd year Gretzky’s in PSA 9 are listed for $3000. Wasn’t this a $300 card about a year or so ago ? My apologies if this is not the actual price and the eBay seller is just fishing.
Is this now the going rate, and if so, when did the rise take place ? Thanks

Some top cards have moved just like the price of silver.
Gold has moved from 1200 in 2018 to 2000ish now. $300 to $3000 is in another stratosphere. Congrats to anyone who owns them.
Pretty stable at $300-400 for over a decade and then in three months this card has jumped 10x. The jumps across the board have been astounding in the last six months.
Frozen. You say across the board. Has Lemieux, Orr, and Howe had an equal rise. Sorry I’m too lazy to check it out, but I don’t follow it closely.
it's been everything. sports cards have basically moved out of the hobby section and into the mainstream investor section. everyone from teenager chore money and sneakerbois to wall street and main street. it's been a very fun ride.
and it's not just hockey. it's literally been everything, not just the 4 main sports. wrestling cards are getting serious action, soccer cards have exploded on to the scene. footy cards are on their way and even some mtg and pokémon cards are commanding six figs. wax is just as hot. and it's just not vintage stuff either. try running by target and walmart and look at the card section. guaranteed you see nothing but a bunch of empty trays on just about everything. you'll prolly even see a couple of excel rep stalkers sitting in the starbucks section just a waiting for the weekly restock.
I was just talking to some colleagues at work about my BBC collection as they spotted some boxes in background on a Zoom call. I mentioned the explosion in prices and they remarked that I must be thrilled. I replied that this has been a fairly boring past 6m as my usual weekly buying of some 80s unopened has been interrupted and now the purchases are more like monthly. I’m a terrible seller, can’t stand to part with stuff, so as a buyer, this run up has been challenging.
