I hate to be that guy but, I'm thinking this is just plain ol corrosion and not an error of some sort. Kind of disappointing on a proof but what do you do

Yes ... it looks like corrosion.
Yup, it's toast. Now you have an opportunity to experiment with that stain-contamination. A dip in acetone is worth the price of admission. also an acetone qtip roll over the goober. Can't make it any worse. Peace Roy
