card grading options and prices for 86 Jordan

Completely new to this. I collected baseball cards with my dad for a few years back in the mid 80s. Mostly all baseball and a few basketball. Luckily one of the few basketball ones that I have is the 86 Fleer Jordan rookie. I know lucky right. Ive known for awhile thats its worth a little bit of money but one of those things where Im not a collector any more I didnt realize it had skyrocketed in price. Saw an article on espn that brought me back around.

My question and thanks in advance is....I was looking into getting it graded by PSA so I could guage its actual value if I wanted to try to sell. I personally think its in decent shape and judging by their grade pictures maybe an 7-8-9? I simply dont know.

If it is an 8 or 9 I need to pay 500 or 2000 dollars to even get it graded? that seems crazy.

Could I get some advice?

You can submit this at $75 and there shouldn't be an issue. If you hit a high grade, you'll need to pay an upcharge, though.

  • meaning you dont think itll score higher or i might be able to get away with lower fee?

It's hard to tell with those top corners as they look a bit iffy. Plus, even though the screwdown is recessed you don't know if there are any surface issues lurking from it being in it so long.

  • what advise would you guys give then? keep it in that and ship that way? is it even worth being graded? am i over grading it cause its mine? lol.

You need to have it graded, but do not send it in the screwdown. You will need to get some cardsaver 1's then just follow their packaging guideline on the website.

  • Seems crazy to just send in a plastic sleeve with some cardboard. That’s how you all send them in all the time? Do that and pack in a box and send away? Does the $75 service sound right? Should I click the box that says no qualifiers?

Thanks for you all taking the time to help me, if nothing else something I can pass down to my kids

  • If you all had to guess what do you think it would grade as? I know you can’t really see great through the holder and all? The cards they show in the examples look rough at 5-6-7. I just think this is centered pretty darn good and it’s not dinged up or anything.

cardsaver or toploader (they are excepting those temporarily) w thick cardboard slats on each side w rubber-band to keep the sandwich together.

    yes, the $75 seems appropriate.

be very careful taking it outta that screwdown holder esp if it seems stuck.

as per grade & w pics provided while still in scratchy screwdown, i'd say 7 would be the absolute best care scenario here but w how hard they are these days, esp on jordan rc, 5.5 - 6 is more likely.

can't tell if the edges are that dirty or just holder optical illusion. same goes w the back. seems like most of the scratches are on the case, but there's a set of "tire tracks" that come up outta the word "club" and run through out the back. those seem on card. but best of luck either way!

as mentioned, do not send into psa in the screwdown. If you are not familiar with inserting cards into top loaders or card savers, practice with some low dollar cards first. I would use a penny sleeve and cardsaver 1 to submit it, but clip the corner of the penny sleeve to prevent it from dinging an edge or corner. Many submitters don't use the penny sleeve.

Also Good advice given here to sandwich it between two thick pieces of cardboard, then double box that or use peanuts and a sturdy box to ship it. Take your time, see if anyone else has better advice, and good luck with the grade. Nice card!

  • It's a nice card and you could pull a 7, but I think that would be on a good day. Still, it's nice and worth grading. The advice you got is good, and you got to get it out of that screw down. Best of luck and keep us updated.

My initial thought was 6-6.5. Looking closer, the LR centering is fantastic, but the TB is not. I'll stick with PSA 6 and yes, it should be graded regardless. This is one of the most faked cards in existence and graded will give any future buyer peace of mind that it's authentic, at the very least.

  • Thanks all for the replies. I do plan on getting it graded though I’m disappointed it’s prob not worth as much as I thought. I’ll let you all know the score when I get it back.

  • Hey guys. Finally got the card back. Came back an 8. To be honest was hoping for a 9 but better than 6. Now to decide whether to sell it. Thanks again for the advice.

Nice card. If you absolutely need the money, yes. This card is on a major price increase, I would hold for now.
