Maybe someone remember who, what, and why on this pack

I purchased this pack a few years ago, and there is one just like it on eBay right now

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Topps-Nolan-Ryan-And-Kirby-Puckett-card/274287650000?hash=item3fdcd164d0:g:MQIAAOSw0yJeVs3Y

That’s two packs with the same cards, my guess it’s some kind of promotion? I would like your thoughts, Thanks.

I can't help on the details of how this pack came to be, but...

Either those are some very special and very different cards from their mass produced counterparts that everyone and their brother already owns or that seller is just crazy to think less than a buck worth of cards is now worth $244 because they are sealed in a small cello wrapper. They are not even the same set, so it is odd that they would even be paired together in a sealed package.

With no special markings, it is also possible someone made a few in an attempt to create a false rarity with common cards. See Holiday rack packs recently flooding the market from Canadian sellers.

I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

Lol, I bought mine years ago and I think I paid less than $10 for it, I agree that he might be a little over priced on a 2 card pack with 2 cards you can buy 100’s of for his asking price. Hence the reason he still owns it and not me.

Topps and Bowman in the same pack is strange, indeed.

I remember getting one of those back when they came out. Not sure, but I think it was maybe inside a cereal box or something similar to that?

Lol, would be a stretch for $2.44 instead of $244, lol. Looks like it could be a card show promotion or even from the National.

I know in 1994 Topps did a "Superstar Sampler" pack with Finest/Bowman/Stadium Club all in the same clear cello pack similar to this. Those cards were marked differently, so perhaps this was an earlier version. I have no idea on distribution of those either.

If you have a blacklight, I'm curious if the green on the back of the Puckett glows or not (and what the sheet code is) ;)

I have seen those before, I took a picture under black light, looks like they both glow.

Sheet code for the Puckett is D*

Those were only done with the glow ink early in the print run (by the time factory sets came out only the ** sheet was the glow ink), so that could lend some legitimacy to it being some sort of sample pack for the upcoming releases.

The glow ink being consistent on both cards at least means they could have been printed around the same time.

Here is another puzzling pack that I need more information on.

If they're all red bordered, they could be from the Score Promos that year. I'm sure the Nolan was possible from that set. If you can make out the back of one, check for zeros in the stats.

It has stats for 1989 for Nolan Ryan

It's not a promo pack then. There were so many test runs, card/trade shows, and crossover promotions w/food, magazines, etc. back then, I'm not surprised that there's some unusual packagings still to be found out there. The packaging on both of these look so similar, it could be anyone doing these in their basement back then too.

I agree, I like the odd packs that show up from time to time. It’s fun trying to decode the baseball card past.

  • The plastic on the Score Pack feels more like the thick plastic on Magazines, I haven’t found a magazine that offered Score cards yet but I’m still looking.
