Rough cut or smooth cut PSA cards

Hey guys,

Does a rough cut edge negatively effect the grade of a card. If I have two cards identical in evry way accept one has a rough cut on one edge; does the rough cut edge effect the grade or is it just a matter of preference i.e. some collectors prefer rough cut to smooth? Comments? The reason I ask is that I'm looking to buy a 1951 Bowman mantle PSA 8 NQ with a rough cut on the left edge.

Rough cut is irrelevant on the 1951 Bowman set. I have many like that in PSA 8. It is a matter of personal preference only. PM me or e-mail me if you want to discuss whether you are paying a fair price or not.

I think it doesn't affect the grade...but it could affect the value. I have seen rough cut PSA 10's. Personally, I would rather have a smooth cut 9.

    Regards,

I would like to own just one PSA 10 from the 1951 Bowman set, but unfortunately there is this small hurdle known as John Branca . . .

I'd rather own a rough cut vintage card - assures it has not been trimmed...
Why do I get the feeling, that some cards are worth money, while others are not?

I called some time ago and PSA said that it doesn't affect the grade.

I don't take rough cuts into account when I bid.

I don't mind rough cuts -- but I do not like when a rough cut makes the corners look blunt
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Marc -- For some reason, the 1949 Bowmans were succeptible to that phenomenon due to rough cuts on both the vertical and horizontal surfaces. The 1951 Bowmans only seem to have vertical rough cuts and thus the corners are usually sharp still.

'53 Bowmans get rough cuts on all four sides.

There's even a strange kind of rough cut that's more of a rip. You'll see what looks like a crease along the edge of the card, and a rip along the crease. The crease is always very clean, like a machine did it. These are always on the tops or bottoms of cards, sometimes both.

    Talk about a grading nightmare.

I can't recall having seen a rough cut '50 Bowman.
