I subbed in December 2019. It was logged mid-January. So a pretty lengthy wait.

I wanted to try to get a rookie PSA 8 some years back, but could never quite get one for around $50 (my price) and that ship sailed and they seemed to settle in around $100 on average and stayed that way for years, but in recent weeks, it sailed again - this time around the world, then sank into the Marianas Trench! That is how close I am to winning a PSA8 Garvey now. The 7s are now breaking regularly breaking $100 and I have seen at least one 6 top $100.

Good for you, but to that I say, WTH?

I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

It's funny to see what happened to the prices of the 1971 Topps Ted Simmons card. Look at the Auction Prices for ANY grade of that card, and it's VERY obvious what happened to that card AFTER his election to the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame and the Set Registry go hand in hand when it comes to card values.

I have tried to be a plan ahead kind of collector, but sometimes that is not possible. For example, I have obtained or tried to obtain an autograph of every possible HOF candidate that is on any upcoming ballot, but sometimes old timers who are hard to find to begin with end up there. I just don't add those guys. I also try to get everyone BEFORE they die too. I also grab autos of guys who join the Dodgers as soon as I hear about it (unless it's someone like Mookie Betts). That one will either be a long time wait or a never.

I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

I think that when "marginal" guys go in the HOF, (Baines being a perfect example) there's a bunch of collectors that buy them because they collect HOF players. I would assume those price jumps are temporary.

I doubt that it has much to do with the registry, but I suppose it could. Simmons, for example has 2-3 guys chasing his cards with Ted Simmons Basic or Master sets.

With superstar players, I don't think the HOF induction has as much effect on their prices, as collectors have already bought them figuring the player will certainly make the HOF.

I have a hard time seeing guys like Baines as "marginal". I reserve that for the likes of Jim Rice, who was far better than Baines, but probably still belongs on the outside. Baines was a mistake, and it is not a close call. Simmons is well within the standards of a HoFer, but was not a lock to get in, kind of like Dwight Evans or Whitaker. Make no mistake, none of these is a travesty that they are not enshrined. You just can't say that "You can't have a Hall of Fame without Ted Simmons." Still, Simmons doesn't get in under the dubious criteria that "Ray Schalk is in. Ted Simmons was better than Ray Schalk. Simmons has to go in." Simmons was better than a lot of HoFers. He's exactly the type of player you'd expect to spike on election.

I figured someone would jump on me calling Baines marginal. NONE of the guys you mentioned are "sure thing HOFers" and thus have a huge following. It really doesn't matter if Simmons is more deserving than Baines or not. He is BTW.

The point I was_ trying_ to make is that some collectors want rookie cards of everyone that gets in the HOF. They might not bother to spend on anyone until they are actually in, so when a "mistake" is made like Baines, these collectors suddenly "need" his cards. Once they get them, a new price has NOT been established, it returns to where it was, or close to it.

I also seriously doubt that a bunch of people start collecting guys like any of the above mentioned players once they get in. So when people blame it on the Registry, I don't really see it.

Baines getting in was not just a mistake imo, but a disaster. How can he be in and not Tony Oliva? Feel free to substitute about 50(?) other players who you would put in before Baines.
