WTB: Key Dates - Digging Deep...

...into my pockets to buy some key dates. I'm looking for the following preferably certified at a reasonable price. Depending upon price, I am looking to pick up at least three of these. I've included the ballpark number I am looking at. I have my eye on some on eBay (slabbed of course) but would prefer to get them from someone in the CU. Again, I'm not looking for the top of the line here, but something reasonable I can use as an album filler (won't break out of slab). I am willing to buy raw if I can confirm authenticity. Anyway, anybody have something they want to part with, let me know.

1937-D 3-legged Buffalo Nickel - $400 - $500
1877 Indian Head Cent - $400 - $700
1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent - $700
1922 "No D" Lincoln Cent - $400-$500
1918/7 Buffalo Nickel - $600
1869/69 Indian Head Cent - $500-$600

I just picked these up this week. Good luck on the hunt!

I have the 1916-D,uncertified. I got it from a reputable dealer. Wonder if I should have it graded just for authenticity purposes? I've go some folks offering so I'm hopeful. That 3 legged is right in my wheel house, congratulations. I was able to find 96 Salt River W quarters in a couple of boxes last weekend and sold them on eBay for $25 each. Able to buy some long, sought after coins. Nice set though.

    One unsolicited thought.....

I went through similar a handful, or two, years ago. I "upgraded" a few keys that I had initially bought as I was "price buying", which is necessary for a lot of us, rather than stretching for something I was happier with.

If these are for flipping, that is one thing. If they are for YOU, and your longterm collection, make sure you like the look.

    2 case in points:
    1) bought a 1955/55 in AU. Looked good. Looked "normal". I ended up buying one that has toning and paid $1000 more (in MS63BN). Had to sell the first one as I didn't need to tie up an additional $1500 for the AU one.
    2) bought a 1916-d merc in PCGS G4. Was nice for the grade. I got it CAC'ed, so they agreed. I then spotted a VG10 that was nice and bought it....THEN spotted a VG06 that had toning. I bought that. I sold the G04 and now think I will sell one of the others, as both are over $1000 (the VG10 is $2k). I don't need to tie all that up as I am not a merc collector...but I liked the keys of different series.

So, make sure, because what you are looking at moneywise isn't chump change, that you like what you get and don't think "I need to upgrade or want to spend a little more for one with a more unique look"

Or, just ignore everything I wrote because you aren't me and I understand that :)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

A key date, particularly one that is counterfeited a lot, like the 1916-d merc, SHOULD be PCGS/NGC so you are more assured of authenticity...and in case you ever need to quickly sell.

I just looked up the process online and it seems a bit convoluted. I am not a member of either, so what do you estimate just a standard submission, requesting a grading and placement in a holder would run?

Someone here is likely to send in a submission. I would either get multiple coins together to include on the submission or track a local dealer down that you can split shipping and insurance with. One coin is almost never worth sending in, even one such at a 16D merc
