A question from an old newbie...
I'm familiar and comfortable on the coin side of collectables, with PCGS and this forum. I am a sports fan 100% though! I did collect baseball cards as a kid in the 70s. If only I still had those! I understand all about raw/graded ect.
Now, I do have toddler grandkids and have thought about picking up some ultra modern cards to save for when they get older. Particularly, 2020/pandemic dated stuff. I've, literally, begun looking/researching this idea for about a week.
My first stop... a Walmart; one of 5 supercenters within 20 miles. Pandemic hours they all open at 7am and this was about 7:15. Walking to the front door a guy comes running, I mean running from the parking lot, right past me. He went straight to the card section where there were 2 other guys already there. Their hands were full of boxes. My first thought, and question to you guys here, was "what are they after?" My second thought was damn, there's alot of brands/choices to choose from. I recognized Topps, Fleer and Donruss. Seemed to me these guys in front of me were after and had something else. Of course, I picked up a couple boxes of the leftovers. The very next day one of the same guys was there again although there was nothing new. I went to a different store the 3rd day and the selection was very small. This morning I went to store 3 of 5 and there was a different guy seemingly there for the same reason. I took him about 10 seconds to see that whatever he was after wasn't there.
Can anyone explain to me what's going on? Any idea what sport(s) it could be? A certain brand I'm unfamiliar with? Is this just a pandemic related happening?
Thanks in advance!
Gene

Evidently panini basketball flies off the shelf and can get flipped on eBay or in card shops for 2-3 times the retail price. I always take a look when I’m in Target (pretty rarely) and I’ve never seen basketball cards stocked in the last year. Always out of stock.
Thank you @uncbuddha. At least it's a sport, on the professional level, that I no longer enjoy!
And thank you Mike for the talk. It was very helpful.
