Is it a good buy at $1500? And is it hard to find? And would you be a buyer at this price?

  • Yes and yes. I would be a buyer at this price after fees and shipping.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.

    Thanks SpinFadeSplash23 (Joe)!

A 1984 Donruss Baseball Wax Box FASC hit BBCEs website last night for $1500. I tossed and turned all night and decided to ask on this board before pulling the trigger a few minutes ago after your post.

I noticed that box yesterday and wondered if anyone would buy at that price.
    Congrats on the purchase!
They had a 1980 topps bb wax box listed about a week or so ago and it didn't last very long either.

There were initially 2 boxes for sale so you weren't the only one.

It is reassuring to me that I made a wise purchase if someone else bought as well at that price. I check their website almost daily and saw it for the first time last night...so I assume the two boxes were not listed very long before being purchased.

I believe they went up for sale about a day or two ago.

I'm a coin guy now. But I remember as a kid paying $5 back in 1989 for those packs, hoping to get a Mattingly. Never got one, or, anything worth the cash....

There was a lot of suspicion Gene, who owned the card shop, was opening the packs up, and resealing them...pretty sure he was. How do you know packs haven't been opened; resealed?

I'd question any claim of unopened....

If you handle enough vintage unopened packs over the years, determining whether a pack is authentic or not is not very difficult. Sort of like coin guys telling if a coin has been cleaned or not, but probably even a bit easier than that, if you know what signs to look for.

That said, boxes that are labeled FASC ( From a Sealed Case) are pulled straight from a sealed case before being wrapped and designated as such, so not only are the packs 100% guaranteed unopened and authentic but all 36 packs to the box are guaranteed original, too.

Thank you for sharing the information on unopened boxes. So much has evolved with this hobby that I'd be a fish out of water attempting to get back in it. I was awfully tempted last year to bid on an unopened box of 1981 Topps Baseball, but didn't for lack of knowledge. If I ever find myself getting that urge again I'll be sure to come here and ask questions first.
