During the pandemic a few months ago. Everything went up
Prices were rising significantly well before the pandemic. COVID just turbo boosted it.

I can’t believe the prices on 1983 Topps wax, going for over a grand a box!!
before this all happen what was 83 topps wax going for?
Last thanksgiving when BBCE had their 10% off sale I bought some wax boxes for
around $365 per box.
1983 wax has three Hall of Famer’s and is arguably the best baseball year for rookies between 1976 and today. I’m surprised 1981 & 1984 are as expensive as they are, not 1983.

Agree. The "big three" all are selling for $1400.00 and up in PSA 10. Gwynn's rookie looks like it will hit $2000.00 soon.
1978 is kicking dirt and cussing you out right now, lol.
i can. as well it should be. 3 top tier hof rcs w/ solid design and somewhat decent quality control.
actually think it should be worth quite a bit more honestly.
but am stocked and biased too.
That’s another good year and I agree 1978 is very solid with Molitor and Murray making it in on their first HOF ballet like Gwynn And Boggs. SandBerg puts 1983 over the top versus Jack Morris and Allen Trammel though that didn’t make it in the hall thru the normal 15 yr voting process but recently thru the veterans committee exception.

With all due respect to 1978, the 1983 triumvirate of Boggs/Sandberg/Gwynn has always been far more popular than 1978's Molitor/Trammell/Morris. I'd say they were better players, too.
I am happy that I own 1983 Topps Michigan Test Boxes x 2. I need to have them BBCE wrapped. I paid $200/box back in late 1980s...and finally I am in the black. Holding for now...
I agree. I think 83 topps baseball wax should be worth just as much as 81 and 84 football wax
and they are going for $1500-$2000 per box. I don't think the football is any harder to find.
You forgot someone.
HOF or not, I love 1978 as a Tigers because in addition to Trammell and Morris rookies, you also have Lou Whitaker and lance parrish. Also Willie Hernandez in a cubs uniform.
IMO, Whitaker is slightly better than Trammell and far, far better than Morris. Still, if it is those rookies you are excited about, 1978 Burger King Tigers is a better set.
What about Eddie Murray? Him and Molitor had far and away better careers than any of the 83 big three. But then your also ignoring the non-rookie cards of Ryan, Brett, Dawson, Yount and a lot of HOFers not in 83 (Brock, McCovey, Stargell).
Maybe 84, but not 81 for a couple reasons... 81 is available but not readily available, it's underproduced compared to baseball, has the RC of the long-considered GOAT of football, and none of the 83 Big Three have even sniffed the $15+K that a PSA 10 Montana commands.
Just my opinion, but I do love 83!
83 v 78. Good topic. I own boxes of each and price/value aside, I treat the 78 box as more than a notch above.
Part of this for me is 70’s just seems older and more scarce than anything from the 80’s.
Beyond the rookie’s of each set comparison - I would want to see the higher end (non rookie) stars of the 83 set sell for $200-300 in PSA 9, to become a bigger believer. I think that is some ways away.
I love me some 1978 rack packs..

That pic never gets old Tim! Is that Murray rack the one with Molitor/Trammell showing on back?
Here is a link of career lifetime batting averages:
https://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/batting_avg_career.shtml
Gwynn @ #18 and Boggs @ #33 really standout among elite company. Molitor is @ #136 and Murray @ #455...
1983 Topps also has a better design than 1978 Topps...and older isn't always better. I am feeling my age and it doesn't feel good!
Thanks! I don't recall offhand. I stupidly sold that one a while back but I have a couple others with Murray on top, still.

But look at the all-time hits list and see which two players are ahead. Add Murray being in the 500 HR Club, as a switch-hitter to boot... and the run production of both, it's pretty easy to say they had better careers. Design is a personal choice and neither fall short imo, but 78 has the demand and a better crop of cards... gimme 12 packs of 78 over box of 83s any day. 😁
What about Eddie Murray? Well, see...what had happened was...I, ya know, well, uh...
I was thinking Eddie's RC was 1977.
Without a doubt, Lou was better than Morris. In terms of the hobby, Whitaker has always trailed Tram in terms of interest and popularity. Same with Parrish.
Man the Tigers were loaded on young guys in this era. AND they had Ozzie Smith and blew it! Imagine Ozzie at SS, moving Tram to 3B. Nothing would have ever gotten through the infield!
Solely from a design perspective, I prefer '83 over '78. Offer me to take my pick of a free pack or box and i'd take the '78.
eta: while not a hof'er, '78 also boasts the dale murphy rookie card. a 2nd year rookie card, that is.
I recently noticed that a 1984 Topps Don Mattingly RC graded PSA GEM-MT 10 has increased in value.
What kind of prices are we looking at??
As high as $600. That is more than triple what I paid for mine only a few years ago.
egads, you are missing something HUGE that I see has been brought to your attention LOL not to mention Lou Whitaker and Lance Parrish rookies. 1978 Topps is E P I C

So is 1987
Terry Bradshaw was AMAZING!!

87 Donruss might be in the conversation but 87 topps is pretty far behind 83 and 78. For that matter 87 topps is way behind 86 topps traded, now there’s another set that could make the top 5 from 76 till today based on rookie strength.

87 Donruss might be better than topps right now because of prices. Alot more topps available but just as good star power.

I’m glad Tim weighed in on which set he’d choose I wasn’t sure which year he’d go with 😀
Here’s a couple packs from both so you can choose the better design:

Why do you say? A quick glance at the checklist shows 0 HoF rookies with Bonds having the best shot at getting in.
Ah, yes that explains it. I do count the traded set cards as rookie cards so I don’t see any rookie cards in 87 topps outside of Larkin.
I also mostly think the sets with the higher prices are the better sets, it’s much more the rule than exception anyway. In 1987 Donruss issued the rookie cards for Maddux, Steinbach, Cone and Kevin Brown and has a nice original card design that makes it harder to find centered PSA 10s. The 87 topps design is lazy and has a rookie crop barely better than the 62 rookie crop.

Pretty sure Maddux and Larkin are already in the hall. 😀

Is it even debatable which year is more appealing??

I thought all you “collectors” of unopened were all about the “joy” of the “hobby” and did not care about the money? 😂😂
I thought unopened was dead LOL..

I've got a 1978 FASC rack box. I often stare at it wishing I had x-ray vision to see who is showing on each of the packs.
Incoming message for Grotemart 🤣
Tremendous packs in this thread, thanks for sharing.
The 80s is what appeals to me because it’s what I collected as a kid. I salivated over the prospects of even one pack of 1983 Topps back when I started in 1987, but that never came to pass. Now it’s my favorite set of the 80s and therefore my favorite of all time.
That said, 1978 is my favorite looking set from the 70s. Both are great. To me, it always goes back to when I was younger. That’s why I only collect baseball cards. Wish I had diversified, but that stuff doesn’t appeal to me. Same with going deeper into the 70s. Wish I had done it now from a value perspective, but hoarding tons of 80s stuff was so much more appealing given the connection to my youth.
Just my personal point of view and probably not the best one.
John
The first baseball cards that I ever collected were 1978 Topps. I never came close to completing that set. I was eight years old at the time. I am currently building a set in mint condition. The first set of baseball cards that I ever completed was 1988 Topps. I am currently having many of those cards autographed. Those are my favorite baseball sets from the 1970s and 1980s.
I was replying to the 1986 Topps Traded comment being in the top 5 from 76 until today.
Yeeeaaaahhhhh, I may have missed one or two. Maybe.
Oh got it... the 1986 Topps traded set is my #w set of the top 5 of sets because it containes 2 of the top 5 highest priced rookie cards of the 80s plus 3 other very quality rookie cards.
The 80 Henderson on any given day is the highest value psa 10 card over 30k
Then we have the 85 Tiffany Clemens, Puckett and McGwire coming in at 7k, 5k, 12k
Then 86 topps traded Tiffany with Bonds and Jackson at 5k+ with Canseco, Clark, and Galaraga as added muscle.
So my top 5 sets are:
1985 Topps Tiffany
1986 Topps traded Tiffany
1983 Topps
1978 Topps
1984 Fleer update

I started collecting in 1978 so 1978 has a huge soft spot in my heart. It really is my all time favorite set for that reason and I love the design, photos, everything about it. 1983 was back in one of my glorious years of collecting with my grandparents so no knock on that set at all but 1978 wins for me!
If it was up to me there would be no update sets, no tiffany, no heritage, nothing
except the basic topps set every year.
Just my opinion and nothing against those sorts of cards but I had a bad experience in 1976 and
it stuck with me. Opened packs and packs in 76 of topps bb and they stuck at least 2 or 3 of those
terrible looking 76 traded cards in every pack. Left a bad taste in my mouth along with the gum
and I've never liked traded cards since then.
Same with 74 Topps, hated getting those traded cards in packs!!
