1980s Topps Update Sets

Is it true those Update sets came from the factory with a piece of scotch tape over the lid opening?

    That is correct.

1981-1986 had a piece of thin scotch tape. 1987-1988 did not have any tape. 1989 had the tape again.

Hi Chris, Thanks for this info. In your experience were there any exceptions? I have some crazy sharp 86 sets stashed away somewhere and didn’t recall tape but were told they were from case. And they looked it when I picked them up.

    Hi John,

No exceptions that I am aware of. However, the tape does brittle over time depending on the temp they are stored in. I have seen the tape cleanly fall off 1986 sets straight from cases I have opened. So your sets could very well be untouched from a case and simply had the tape dry out and fall off cleanly. I would look to make sure there are no white stresses on the cardboard at the top-rear of the set, which is a telltale sign it has been opened. There also shouldn’t be any tearing at the front flap where the set would be opened.

    Cheers,
    Chris

BBCE is wrapping them, at least 81-86, noting if tape is intact. I see they wrap some with no tape. Does anyone know that if they wrap it it’s in their opinion unopened, or just looking for it to be a complete set?

I could be wrong but I don't believe all Traded sets from years like '86 and '89 came with tape from the factory.

Dug out my 1983 TT sets to check the tape on them (all still intact thank goodness) and saw something I never noticed before.

Never new they were printed in Ireland.
