Here is an interesting piece from the Society of Medalists that I recently acquired in the last Stacks auction.
1933 No Easy Way from Earth to Stars Medal. By Gaetano Cecere. Alexander-SOM 8.1 Bronze. Dark Matte Brown. NGC MS-66
This medal is massive, about the size of a coaster. I was shocked when it arrived in one of those oversized NGC holders. Very thick, too. And heavy!
Although it didn't come with any of the original paperwork, I tracked these photos down online and they make for an interesting read from the sculptor himself:

I like it. Appreciate the sculptor’s commentary too.

A majority of SoM collectors prefer complete issues -- the medal, descriptive folder and original MACO box and will pay for them so the medals by themselves are often available at attractive prices. The first 20 years of SoM issues (40 medals) include a host of beautifully designed pieces by the top artists of the time including several U.S. coin designers. Medallic Art did a wonderful job of execution including several special finishes - everybody has their own favorite.
Is that Devil's Tower? The artist may have anticipated Mr. Spielberg!
Very nice Society of Medalists piece @DCW!
I don't have any, but I have a piece from the earlier Circle of Friends of the Medallion.
@keets has some SoM pieces, including Man bursting the Bounds and Back of Man.

yes, quite an attractive issue that I'm glad you were able to win in that auction. this Lot was on my "watch list" from my first online trip through the catalogue until about a week before that sale!! once I got really focused I decided not to chase after it.
Thanks @keets. I only collect these kinds of issues casually, but this one appealed to me. Mainly for the quote.
Here is a photo of it in the giant slab with a dime on top for comparison.

For those who want to know more about the Society of Medalists and the Circle of Friends of the Medallion I highly recommend the book "American Art Medals, 1909-1995" by David Alexander. The book was published by the American Numismatic Society in 2010 (ISBN 978-0-89722-317-1).
The Society of Medalists produced its final medal in 1995.
nice.
just shy of 2x the diameter of any of our (legal tender) largest coin dollars!

Is it in a double thick holder with two inserts? I thought it was neat how NGC stacks 2 of the white plastic inserts in some of these. Not sure if they ever use more than 2.
It's a wonderful piece. I love the design and slogan. Reminds me of when I climbed Devil's Tower back in the day (never thought I'd say that!)
@DCW ... you have some of the coolest stuff around ... thx for sharing !!!
